Assam bleeds before Assembly polls; 8 BSF jawans killed, 5 Congress men injured

Assam bleeds again. Bombs and bullets threatens to bury the hope of peace in the poll bound state. After a brief silence, the anti-talk faction of NDFB and ULFA roared again. Eight BSF personnel were killed and 5 Congress men have been injured in two seperate strike by the banned insurgent outfit on Monday.


At least eight BSF personnel were killed and the same number injured on Monday in an ambush by the anti-talk faction of National Democratic Front of Bodoland in Kokrajhar district. Th e Bodo outfit used automatic weapons to ambush the convoy of the BSF in remote Ultapani forest area near the Indo-Bhutan border.


The BSF jawans were killed on the spot, five others succumbed to their injuries on way to hospital. Some of the eight injured jawans were rushed to the Hospital at Bongaigaon, while others were taken to Kokrajhar civil hospital for treatment. The deceased have been identified as Bijoy Kumar, S K Sharma, Arabinda Dere, Bolaram Lamba, Santa Ramthree, Naresh Kumar, Kuber Bora and Hira Singh.


A combing operation have been launched by the security forces, including the Army along the Indo-Bhutan border, to nab the culprits. The patrol was on way from Bangladoba in Chirang district of Assam to Ultapani in Kokrajhar when it was ambushed.


Hours after this attack, ULFA lobbed a powerful EID at the Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati leaving 5 perosns injured. The incident took place at around 6-55 in the evening with a huge sound when party spokesman Mehdi Alom Bora was sitting at his chamber. Kalyan Gogoi, Akhsyay Rajkhowa and Ranjan Bora were also left injured in the blast. Mehdi Alom Bora’s condition is critical who is undergoing treatment at the Guwahati Medical College Hospital.


Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who arrived in Guwahati from Delhi rushed to the GMCH immediately after the incident and visited the injured persons. Gogoi also visited the incident spot and instructed the district administration to firmly deal with the situation. Several other political parties also have criticized the banned insurgent outfit for the blast.


Meanwhile, ULFA has claimed the responsibilities of the blast and threatened to continue these attack. In an e-mail statement sent to media, Commander in Chief Paresh Baruah said that this attach is simply a message to Congress. The blast took place a day after the ruling party announced the names of 118 candidates for the upcoming Assembly polls.


It may be noted that ULFA threatened to target the Congress parties in rank and file for splitting the outfit. But the government downplayed the threat.

ULFA for death penalty review

ULFA’s anti talk faction has urged the Bangladesh judiciary to review its order of death sentence for Paresh Baruah in the arms smuggling case.In a press statement, the outfit said that they have already made the review request to the Chittagang Court two days after it issued the death sentence to the ULFA Commander-in-Chief along with 14 others.The sensational incident took place in 2004 where police seized ten trucks carrying arms and ammunition for Baruah. In 2010, the court issued non bail-able warrant against the ULFA boss. 

Sahitya Sabha begins session

With much fanfare and cultural extravaganza, the Asom Sahitya Sabha began its special session in Guwahati on Saturday.Sabha president Imran Shah hoisted the Sabha flag at a brief function at the Sahityarathi Laxminath Bezbaruah Khetra in Khanapara in the morning.This was followed by the inauguration of the Mamoni Roisom Goswami Memorial Book Festival and the exhibition.Sahitya Sabha officials told Assam Times that they chief minister Tarun Gogoi is scheduled to attended the session where they would mount pressure on him to implement the Official Language Act at the earliest.  

Protest in Lajpatnagar

Thousands of north east students hit the streets in New Delhi on Saturday demanding exemplary punishment for the goons involved in the Lajpatnagar incident where a student from Arunachal Pradesh were beaten to death on Thursday.With banners and festoons, over three thousand youths took out a protest rally in the Market place area in Lajpotnagar demanding justice for Nido Tania, the son of MLA in Arunachal Pradesh.They further criticized the Delhi government alleging lack of prompt action against the accused youths. Cong vote to Opp!

AIUDF president on Saturday claimed that the Opposition consensus candidate in the Rajya Sabha poll Haidor Hussain is likely to get vote even from a section of Congress legislators.Addressing a joint press conference with Hussain in Guwahati Ajmal said that he was in touch with a circle of Congress legislators for vote in favour of Hussain.He said that horse trading won’t benefit Congress and BPF in the polls. “I am confident that Hussain would be able to win the poll with flying colours,” said Ajmal.

Opposition consensus candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha polls Haidor Hussain accused Congress of trying to kidnap a section of opposition legislators to ensure win in the polls slated for February 7.Addressing a joint press conference with AIUDF president Badaruddin Ajmal on Saturday in Guwahati, the veteran journalist said that horse trading is unlikely to help the party. This has forced the party to prepare a blueprint where a few legislators would be kidnapped.  He said that he was getting overwhelming response from all quarters after he fielded his nomination papers.He said that some political parties want him to be fielded in Lok Sabha polls from Koliabor constituency.

Nido killers caught

Delhi police on Saturday claimed to have caught two youths in connection with the Lajpotnagar incident where goons thrashed an Arunachal Pradesh student to death on Thursday.Sources told Assam Times that Lajpotnagar police have arrested two accused namely Farhan and Akhtar—local youths who were running a paneer shop in the area. Investigation is in progress.

Gangrape rattles Nagaon

Once again an incident of gangrape seems to have touches off seismic waves of shocks and anger in the state. The victim this time is a 16 year old girl in the heart of the Nagaon town.The girl was rescued in a deserted road in the town three days after she went missing from a social welfare department owned house in Jail Road.The girl is believed to have been repeatedly gangraed by 7 goons for the last three days at a house and was dumped on Friday night. Her medical treatment is underway. Police officials probing the case are understood to have found the lead. Details are awaited.

Poaching strikes Kaziranga

Poachers have struck again in Kaziranga. A full grown rhino was killed in the national park on Saturday.The carcass was found at the Agaratoli range of the national park where the poachers took away the horn. Forest guards rushed to the site after they came to hear the sound of firing in the place.   

Gogoi takes on Kejriwal

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi dared Arvind Kejriwal to move the investigating agencies with allegations corruption against him  hours after the Delhi Chief Minister called him one of the most corrupt political leaders in the country.  Taking to reporters in the sidelines of a function in Dibrugarh on Friday, Gogoi said that if the AAP leader has any evidence then why he has yet to move the investigating agencies for probe? “Let him probe the allegations of corruption against me. Why has not he did it? These are political gimmick and nothing else,” said the chief minister.Kejriwal on Friday called Gogoi one of the most corrupt political leaders in the country.
