Women entrepreneurs of Assam got recognition

Meghalee Bora and Manomoti Kakoti Barman made Assam proud when they received Special Recognition Award from the president of India for the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises in New Delhi. These two women entrepreneurs have done significant works in their respective field of food processing for more than a decade. They were recently felicitated by North Eastern Regional Agriculture Marketing Corporation (NERAMAC).


Meghalee Bora, proprietor of Meghalee Food Products in Jorhat, has been working for the last decade to produce locally made food items like pickle and various species. While Manomati Kakati Barman who owns Shri Ganesh Food Products in Guwahati also been involved with the entrepreneurship for several years.


An elated Meghalee Bora after being felicitated said, “I’m very glad to receive the award and happy that NERAMAC has felicitated our efforts. I would like to dedicate this award to my father. He always encouraged us to be honest and dedicative towards our work.”


Meghalee Bora’s mission was started in the year 1997 with mere Rs 500 and at present she has a return of around Rs 1 lakh per month. The lady employs 17 local women in her factory and thinking to create more job opportunities.


“I started to produce food products in 1997 with an investment of Rs 500. And today where I stand is the outcome of my hard work and dedication. At present 17 women work in Meghalee Food Products and I’m looking forward to give more opportunities to local girls so that they can become self-dependent,” said Bora.


She also thanked NERAMAC for helping them in marketing the products in a great way and appealed people to give more importance to locally produced items. “The NERAMAC has helped us in marketing our products in various places. I would like to request to the people to use local products. It will be helpful in everyway,” she further added.


NERAMAC helped them by showcasing their products in various national and international exhibitions and fairs like in Thailand and Vietnam. In a recent international programme of India Pack 2010 at Mumbai, NERAMAC took 16 entrepreneurs from eight states of the northeast to showcase their product ranges to give them a facelift.


Manomati Kakati Barman another award winning entrepreneur, who also provides training of food processing, expressed her satisfaction at her mission. “I always wanted to do something. It is the outcome of my tremendous hard work for the last decade. I hope that such recognitions would help us and others to move ahead,” said Barman.


NERAMAC is a Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, Government of India, whose objective is to help processing units market their products.

Union Ministry of Home Affairs will conduct special recruitment drives in the month of May-June, 2013 in the border districts of Assam for Category-Constable/GD posts.
