University course for security guards


With more and more business establishments, apartments, and other development taking place in Guwahati, security guards are now a common sight in the city. However the people in general yet to have high respect for these security guards. Perhaps people think that the security guards are not professional enough besides doesn’t have real training or possess any certificate. Now one should not be surprised to learn when a security guard holds a university certificate for his job, and that he might me knowing the IPC and the CRPC much better than many of us. Though there are courses meant for security guard trainings, in Assam the Krishna Kanta Handiq Open State University has launched a new course for security guards.


The Krishna Kanta Hadique State Open University of Assam has introduced a course for the security guards and the first batch course has started in May 1. ‘We are very happy to introduce a certificate course for security guard training, the Sterling Security Agency had come with the proposal and had designed a course which was modified by us as per as university standard and now it has been implemented”, says S. Baruah, Vice Chancellor of the University.


The “Sterling Security Force” is run by three gentlemen who earlier served in the defense force. Thomas Kurian, Retd. DIG, Wing Commander S. K Baruah and Wing Commander V K Baishya, both retired. This agency was started in year 1995, to give direction and proper training to security guards and thus make them more professional for Jobs. Finally they were able to get introduced a Security Guard course in the KKHOSU, the University which has come up just four years back. The introduction of this course will give more dignity and professionalism to the job of security guard and thus creating a proper job opportunity. Akashi Gaur, a security suard says that the new course and the certificate will give a lot of value to their job.


There are some more than 50 local security agencies in the state, generating employment, however all are not registered. The University Course is open to all who have passed their matriculation and the university has already recognized a training centre in North Guwahati. The first Batch has some 25 students and some are from Jharkhand and the duration of the course is four weeks, followed by examination. “The threat of terrorism always looms large in our country and thus it’s important for well trained security guards, who can also be a help for the security forces”, says Thomas Kurian.


The Security Guard course under the KKHSOU has six chapters that include Basic Knowledge, Fire fighting and disaster management, First Aid, Law, IPC, CRPC (1973) and Security Management, apart from practical trainings.


The ‘Private Security Agencies (Regulation) Act was enacted in the parliament in 2005 No.29 of June 23, 2005. In Assam, the act was notified in the Assam Gazette on October 22, 2008. However in many states this act is yet to be published for notification.
