Kalaigaon students observe World Environment Day


On the occasion of World Environment Day 2010, special programmes were arranged at various places of Kalaigaon. Situated in backward rural areas, 10 km away from Kalaigaon town, the students and teachers of Balipara KM High School also observed the day with three days programme.The programme was sponsored by Sahiruddin Ahmed, (better known as Plantation Crusader), in association with Aryabhatta Science Centre, Kalaigaon under Assam Science Technology and Environment Council, Guwahati.A seminar on global warming and climate change was arranged on June 3 at the school premises which was conducted by Sahiruddin Ahmed, Head Master of the school. On June 4, plantation and protection programme was launched in the school as well as in the Balipara village. 50 nos of coconut fruit and medicinal plants each had been planted on the occasion by the students with protective fencing. Another 500 nos of seedlings were also prepared in the attached nursery by the students. It needs mention that teachers and students of the school had so far planted 800 nos of various plants in the school and village including 96 coconut trees. The school although a venture one has been a live example of hard work and dedication to all in the field of conservation of nature and wild life. Recently a group of 69 students toured different villages on bi-cycle spreading the message of peace and conservation.


On June 5 quiz, drawing and extempore speech were arranged at the school premises followed by the prize distribution ceremony attended by hundreds of people. Sahiruddin Ahmed, Head Master of the school had presided over the meeting and distributed the prizes to the winners. Several distinguished social workers including Mahendra Baro and Mina Ram Boro attended the session. In quiz competition-Dibyajyoti Das, Lakhyadhar Boro and Shemim Akhta;in drawing Ria Das,Juphiana Ahmed and Meenakshi Boro;in extempore speech,Dibyajyoti Das,Dulumoni Sarania and Lakhyadhar Boro;in plantation and care competition- where 15 groups participated (four in each group) Purabi Deka, Sushmita Kachari and Anup Das's won first three prizes. World Environment Day was also observed at Bholabari High School and Jawahar Novodaya Vidyalaya,Kalaigaon with various programme.

In a very tragic and barbaric incident, Puspanjali Das (19)wife of Chandan Debnath of Thakuriapara village under Bhergaon sub-division in Udalguri district has been burnt down alive on Saturday noon for non-payment of marriage dowry. The incident has shocked the district. The lady was put in a sac before thrown in a fire lighted in a heap of hay. Puspanjali was married to Chandan just three months bac.
