Environmental Summit at IITG

‘Prakriti’, the environmental group comprising the students of Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati organized IIT G EnvironmentaL awareness Summit on 13 and 14th February at its campus premises. IEAS'10 was a student initiative and was the first of its kind student activity in IITG campus and was initiated by the club secretary Hifzur Rehman. The main aim of this summit was to raise awareness among the IITG community about the environmental problems that we are facing today and how can we contribute in the redressal of such sensitive issues.


The summit extended over a period of 2 days - 13th and 14th Feb'10. The students carried out a Campus Cleanliness Drive on 13th morning which was later followed by a guest lecture by Mr.Ranjan K Baruah,Chief Convener-YAC where he talked about the drastic climatic changes that our planet is undergoing and what all is being done in relation to that and how the youths can be a reckoning force in combating these issues.


On February 14 a Plantation Drive in the campus was carried out by the students to show their concern for mother nature. Later in the day "IITG Energy Saving Day" was observed by the students of IIT Guwahati and they switched off all the hostel lights for 1 hour. IEAS attracted a lot of students showing their concern about the prevalent environmental problems and served as a platform to discuss these issues.

Two suspected Muslim United Liberation Tigers of Assam (MULTA) has been arrested by the 43 Assam Rifles in a combing operation from the Koliabhumura area in Tezpur on 29-07-08 evening. In tragic incident, three wild elephants have been found dead inside the Sengelijan Elephant Reserve Forest under Gohpur Sub-division near Sirajukli Karbi Village on 27th July morning. An electricity post was damaged due to the excavation work going on for construction of the widening process of the proposed four lane road in front of the Khetri Police Station, near Guwahati today. The resulted short-circuit in the electrical post damaged many electronics goods of that area used in the households. In a crucial turn around, Top United Liberation Front of Assam leader Prabal Neog alias Benudhar Bora has been released from the Dibrugarh Central Jail this afternoon. Assam's first photo-journalist and cine director Amulya Manna passed away at Nagaon on 19-01-08 at the age of 80. He left behind his wife, one daughter and three sons.Besides being involved in the production of several cinemas in Assam, he directed 'Marishika', 'Pathar Aru Jiban' and documentaries, 'Sadiya Radha' and 'Flowers of Assam'.
