Assam defys militant diktat; celebrates R-Day

Defying a 17 hour long militant diktat, Republic Day was celebrated across the state in Assam on Tuedsay. Assam Governor Janaki Ballav Patnaik led the state in the celebration who appealed to the rebel outfits to shun the path of violence and come to the table for settlement of all their problems.

Unfurling the national flag at the Latasheel Field, in Guwahati in the morning, he said efforts are on to bring ULFA, NDFB and other militant groups to the negotiation table.

"The and order situation has improved significantly in the State and people have come to realize the futility of violence," he siad. Before that the Governor inspected an impressive parade and took salute at the march past by forces and school children. The function was marked by cultural display by different communities of the State.

No untoward incident has been reported from anywhere in the State during the Republic Day functions held amidst tight security. We have reports of Republic day celebrations in other parts of the state.

Notably, ULFA and 4 other rebel outfits gave boycott call of the Republic Day. But only to be defied.
