Dibruagarh: It was a hectic day for Assam Health Minister, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma in Dibrugarh where he had come for a surprise visit of AMC. There senior AMCs doctors were transferred after which he addressed a press conference lambasting leader of AGP (P), Prafulla Kumar Mahanta.
Three Senior Doctors of AMC, Prof Santanu Lahkar (orthopaedics), Prof Girin Gogoi (medicine) and Prof Rajib Bhattacharjee (anaesthesia) have been summarily transferred to the SilcharMedicalCollege. Mr Sarma declined to comment to the press on the exact reasons behind it but it is understood that these doctors were running their own private practices which were given preference over AMC to the extent that people were encouraged to go to the private hospitals in place of AMC.
Citizens of Dibrugarh see this as a positive sign. However Dr Sarma would also need to see how would he ensure that students do not loose academically due to dearth of senior teachers. It is expected that more heads may roll shortly and one may see major changes in the different government hospitals in the State.
Post this in a crowded press conference; Mr Sarma went all out against Prafulla Mahanta accusing the former Chief Minister of being opportunistic to achieve political goals and orchestering a group of traders for demanding Presidents Rule in Assam. He said the persons who accompanied Mahanta to Guwahati include Rupam Goswami, a former AGP activist, Onkarmal Agarwalla, an AGP(P) member and Vijai Gupta, a treasurer of the Assam unit of BJP who are essentially politicians and not traders.
