Residential multi-skill and leadesrhip programme inaugurated by Chief Minister

A three week long residential multi skill and leadership development programme was launched by Chief Minister of Assam Sri Tarun Gogoi at a brief and solemn function held at the State Museum Auditorium on 10th July, 2009 at 11 am. The programme is being organized jointly by the newly established IGNOU Institute of Vocational Education and Training , Shillong , in collaboration with North East Girl Students Association (NEGSA) , North East Development Finance Corporation Limited(NEDFI) and sponsored by Oil India Limited. Altogether 90 participants from various parts of the NE region are participating in the event , who have been provided to and fro traveling expense and free accommodation and fooding by the organizing committee. About 20 participants are drawn from families from Kokrajhar, Bagsa, Nalbari, Barpeta etc that have become the victim of terrorist violence The main objective of the programme is to build up a dedicated and empowered group of trained young women who can play a proactive role in the nation building process. During the programme , the participants are being trained in Yoga and meditation, Art of Public Speaking, Communication Skill, Physical Fitness , Self Defence, Legal Awareness, RTI Act, Entrepreneurship Awareness, Self Confidence, Leadership Training, Time Management,. Interview skill, Disaster Management and First Aid training, Raising Emotional Intelligence etc.


Miss Munmi Dutta, President, NEGSA , delivered the welcome address . Sri Tarun Gogoi in his inaugural speech appreciated the effort taken up by IGNOU and NEGSA and assured all possible help from the State Government. He stated that the Govt shall come forward to help in setting up a full fledged Vocational Training Centre for providing round the year training programmes, Referreing to the National Skill development Mission, he said that there are many talented women in the region who can establish themselves to be successful entrepreneurs by receiving proper guidance and assistance.


The inaugural programme was also addressed by Padmashree Natwar Thakkar, Mr Rekibuddin Ahmed, Member Secretary, State Level Advisory Board for welfare of Youth and Students, Mr Akshoy Sharma, general Manager( Planning) , NEDFI, Mrs Bina Gupta, Vice Principal, Hansdique Girls’ College., Mr Khalilur Rahman, Project Co-ordinator of Aswas for Barpeta District. and Dr Gagan Chandra Baruah, Former Principal, Handique Girls’ College.


Dr Vardhini Bhattacharyya, Regional Director, IGNOU , Guwahati Regional centre , offered the Vote of thanks. She mentioned about the various initiatives that has been taken up by the Guwahati Regional Centre for the benefit of the youth of the region which includes Screen Printing training, Mobile Phone Repairing, etc All these programmes are conducted free of cost and a large number of youths and women have benefited from it.

The programme is unique, specially the effort taken to help the girls from terrorist affected families. Congratulations to IGNOU, NEGSA , NEDFI , OIL and other collaborators.

It is really heartening to know that IGNOU and OIL are coming forward to practically help the women of the region. Other Corporate sectors should also adopt agenda to help and train the vast pool of young women who can be made highly skilled to compete at the National as well as International level. Tourism development is one sector which have great potentiality and needs to be focussed.

Empowering and training the young girls is the need of the hour. Remarkable transformations in the society can be achieved through the development of the girl and young women. Indeed a very good effor, which needs to be replicated at all the states of NE region.

First private chopper service from Thursday; two choppers ready

Come Thursday. Assam is set to get its private helicopter service. The first private chopper service is expected to ferry tourists. Moreover, it would help the patients get airlifted in the remote areas for treatment. Assam businessman rescued from GNLA clutches; Four arrested

Meghalaya police on Tuesday rescued a businessman a few days after suspected militants of Garo National Liberation Army kidnapped him at gunpoint. He was rescued hours after Meghalaya police launched an operation to launch Dinesh Sharma, an owner of a stone crusher plant at Umtyrnga in Ri-bhoi district. He was abducted last week and the militant group had demanded a ransom of Rs 1.3 crore from his family. A police team also arrested six militants from their base in a jungle in Pilangkata area of the district. Doctor kidnapped at gunpoint from Guwahati

The heavy security presence in Guwahati seems to have failed to halt the repeated incidents of murder and kidnapping in Guwahati. Suspected ULFA militants have kidnapped at doctor from the city at gun point on Tuesday. The incident took place at 9 in the evening when three unidentified armed miscreants took away doctor MC Agarwalla from his chamber at Fancybazar based Dhanuka Complex. Top ranked police and civil officials have rushed to the spot and search operation is going on. Police officials tracing the development are clueless so far.

Accidental shoot out: 2 killed

Two persons dead and two others sustained serious injury when they were hit by shells used during firing practice by army personnel in Baksa district on Tuesday. The accidental shoot out took pace when four local residents were collecting firewood near the Sukanjali firing range. The shells used by the army personnel during practice session hit them killing two persons on the spot and injuring the others. The deceased were identified as Thomas Murmu and Kamal Basumatary. The injured have been shifted to the Guwahati Medical College Hospital in Guwahati.

Akhil Gogoi detained in Jorhat; released later

Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti general secretary Akhil Gogoi was released hours after police detained him on Tuesday along with 500 others for staging a dharna at Jorhat Medical College here. Gogoi, who was released after a few hours, had staged the dharna outside the college and blocked its main gate in protest against alleged anomalies in some ongoing construction work on the campus.

We will not hand over Koinadhara: Rockybul

The Assam Government won’t allow Meghalaya to proceed with the claim over Koinadhara. Talking to reporters at the Assam Assembly House premises on Tuesday, the forest minister said that Dispur has constitutional measures to counter Meghalaya. He said that Assam does not want even an inch of land from Meghalaya and that it won’t allow anybody to claim any plot.

Assam-Meghalaya border dispute over Koinadhana

Once again Assam-Meghalaya border dispute seems to have hit media headlines. The flashpoint this point is Koinadhara where Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has been residing at a Guest House. Meghalaya Revenue Minister R C Laloo on Monday said that had said that Koinadhara belonged to Meghalaya and that Assam would have to vacate the hillock. In a statement, he said he had lots of documents to claim Koinadhara. Before that a senior UDP MLA demanded that Tarun Gogoi should be asked to vacate the hills or be asked to pay rent.

Opp stages walk out over Koinadhara

The Opposition in the Assam Assembly on Tuesday walked out of the House alleging government’s failure to counter the Meghalaya government’s formal claim over Koinadhara. They alleged that despite repeated questions, the government has not come up with convincing reply. Asom Gana Parishad MLA Padma Hazarika raised the issue of Meghalaya government's claim on 12 disputed places, including the Chief Minister's residence in Koinadhara Hill which was earlier the Assam State Guest House and urged the government to make its stand clear on the matter. ATTSA withdraws blockade against Nagaland in Mariani

Nagaland police on Tuesday said that they would take action against the miscreants who recently unleashed terror in Jorhat district. This was decided at a peace meeting between officials of both states and students organisations held at the estate, which is located in the Assam-Nagaland border of Jorhat district. The relief surfaced a day after ATTSA formally withdrew the blockade against Nagaland.

Mariani: Assam, Nagaland to maintain status quo

Assam and Nagaland on Tuesday decided to maintain status quo in the area and restrain any encroachment by people from one state into another's territory. This was decided at a peace meeting in Jorhat on Tuesday. The meeting proposed a five members panel from both states to function as a peace committee. It will monitor the situation and take necessary steps for confidence build up among the public. The district administration of Mokokchung in Nagaland will take immediate steps for removal of armed personnel from Saringyim village of Nagaland.
