Residential multi-skill and leadesrhip programme inaugurated by Chief Minister

A three week long residential multi skill and leadership development programme was launched by Chief Minister of Assam Sri Tarun Gogoi at a brief and solemn function held at the State Museum Auditorium on 10th July, 2009 at 11 am. The programme is being organized jointly by the newly established IGNOU Institute of Vocational Education and Training , Shillong , in collaboration with North East Girl Students Association (NEGSA) , North East Development Finance Corporation Limited(NEDFI) and sponsored by Oil India Limited. Altogether 90 participants from various parts of the NE region are participating in the event , who have been provided to and fro traveling expense and free accommodation and fooding by the organizing committee. About 20 participants are drawn from families from Kokrajhar, Bagsa, Nalbari, Barpeta etc that have become the victim of terrorist violence The main objective of the programme is to build up a dedicated and empowered group of trained young women who can play a proactive role in the nation building process. During the programme , the participants are being trained in Yoga and meditation, Art of Public Speaking, Communication Skill, Physical Fitness , Self Defence, Legal Awareness, RTI Act, Entrepreneurship Awareness, Self Confidence, Leadership Training, Time Management,. Interview skill, Disaster Management and First Aid training, Raising Emotional Intelligence etc.


Miss Munmi Dutta, President, NEGSA , delivered the welcome address . Sri Tarun Gogoi in his inaugural speech appreciated the effort taken up by IGNOU and NEGSA and assured all possible help from the State Government. He stated that the Govt shall come forward to help in setting up a full fledged Vocational Training Centre for providing round the year training programmes, Referreing to the National Skill development Mission, he said that there are many talented women in the region who can establish themselves to be successful entrepreneurs by receiving proper guidance and assistance.


The inaugural programme was also addressed by Padmashree Natwar Thakkar, Mr Rekibuddin Ahmed, Member Secretary, State Level Advisory Board for welfare of Youth and Students, Mr Akshoy Sharma, general Manager( Planning) , NEDFI, Mrs Bina Gupta, Vice Principal, Hansdique Girls’ College., Mr Khalilur Rahman, Project Co-ordinator of Aswas for Barpeta District. and Dr Gagan Chandra Baruah, Former Principal, Handique Girls’ College.


Dr Vardhini Bhattacharyya, Regional Director, IGNOU , Guwahati Regional centre , offered the Vote of thanks. She mentioned about the various initiatives that has been taken up by the Guwahati Regional Centre for the benefit of the youth of the region which includes Screen Printing training, Mobile Phone Repairing, etc All these programmes are conducted free of cost and a large number of youths and women have benefited from it.

The programme is unique, specially the effort taken to help the girls from terrorist affected families. Congratulations to IGNOU, NEGSA , NEDFI , OIL and other collaborators.

It is really heartening to know that IGNOU and OIL are coming forward to practically help the women of the region. Other Corporate sectors should also adopt agenda to help and train the vast pool of young women who can be made highly skilled to compete at the National as well as International level. Tourism development is one sector which have great potentiality and needs to be focussed.

Empowering and training the young girls is the need of the hour. Remarkable transformations in the society can be achieved through the development of the girl and young women. Indeed a very good effor, which needs to be replicated at all the states of NE region.

Sensational murder in Karbi Anglong

Three members of a family, including a woman, were hacked to death and two others seriously injured at a family in Karbi Anglong district on Saturday. According to police, the three were hacked to death by sharp weapons following an altercation in their house at Josephbasti village in the wee hours. Accident in Naharkatiya: 2 died in bike accident

Two youths died when their bike rammed into a tree after losing control over it in Dibrugarh district of Assam on Friday. The accident took place when a bike with two youths rammed into a tree near Joypur tea garden in the evening. Two youths namely Rupen Das and Govind Ghatowar died on the spot.

Sporadic incident mars Kokrajhar bandh

Tension is simmering in Gossaigaon when a 24 hour bandh disrupted normal life in Kokrajhar on Friday. A group of bandh supporters in the evening set on fire two vehicles in Babulbil area on the National Highway 31 after asking the passengers to get down. AMSU gave the bandh cal to protest the arrest of two members on extortion charges.

Forest fire inside Assam State Zoo in Guwahati

Fear psychosis grips the local residents in the Zoo area in Guwahati when they spotted a forest fire atop the hill. They have spotted smokes and fire at a huge portion inside the Assam State Zoo in Guwahati. But the zoo authorities have yet to react. A section of local residents are trying to leave their houses fearing the spread of the forest fire.

Uneasy calm: Naga youths torch farm house in Mariani

An uneasy calm seems t have prevailed along Assam-Nagaland border in Jorhat district on Friday. The situation took a serious turn when a group of youths from Nagaland torched three farm houses and a vegetable garden at a tea estate. The incident occurred at Naganijan Tea Estate under Mariani Revenue Circle and sparked off tension along the interstate border.

Huge ADB loan for infrastructure uplift

Founds would not be a problem to uplift infrastructure sector in Assam. The Asian Development Bank on Friday granted the state a loan of $81 million to develop infrastructure in Guwahati and Dibrugarh. A tripartite agreement to this effect was signed in New Delhi by the Centre, Assam government and ADB. According to information, the money will be used to bring clean and piped water to 350,000 residents in Guwahati besides building a new treatment plant and pumping stations.

Maroani: Economic blockade against Nagaland

Normal surface communication along the Assam-Nagaland border comes to a grinding halt on Friday following road blockade against Nagaland.ATTSA has blockaded the main thoroughfare at Mariani, the only gate way to Mokokchung, Tuensang, Zonebhoto and Phek districts of Nagaland. The blockade was undertaken after armed Naga groups reportedly harassed the people of Naganijan Tea Estate and injured two persons from the estate. DIG for Eastern Range of Assam Police Anurag Tankha and Upper Assam Commissioner Ismail Hussian, inspected the site and took stock of the situation.

Militancy stumbling block in Indo-Burma trade!

Militancy in North East seems to have stymied the prospect of a comfortable bilateral trade between India and Burma Dr Tint Swe from chairman BCD said that both the countries have potentials to boost bilateral trade. Interacting with media in Guwahati on Friday, the Burma scholar said that military action is not the solution to wipe out insurgency in the region. He stressed political initiatives to end the chapter of bloodshed in the form of insurgency.

Over 50 injured in Tezpur group clash

Tension prevails in Tezpur when fifty people have been injured in a group clash on Friday.The took place at around 4 in the evening when a group of youths clashed with some local residents at Hazarikachuk. The local residents in large number also countered the youths with sharp dao and arson forcing the security forces to stop in. Over 50 people from both sides have been injured who were rushed to the hospital.
