NGO electrifies village in Darrang district

Goonj, a Delhi based NGO, has been trying to meet up a most essential basic needs for the thousand of toil human from its inception throughout the country. The organisation collects any types of unused but useful goods from the various sources and distributs among the poorest of the poor.

The latest example is the electrification work at Katara Village near Shipajhar of Darrang District, through the restless effort by Dr. Pradip Kr. Sarmah, Executive Director of Centre for Rural Development (CRD), a Guwahati based national level professional developmental organization. After 62 Years of Independence, the Katara Village was unable to get the bless of Assam State Electricity Board and observing that situation, Dr. Sarmah has collected a 15 KV Generator from Goonj, transported it from Delhi to Darrand, he has made it reality and electrifying the Katara village four to five hours daily in the evening.

The electrification scheme was inaugurated at a function on May 2 in the Village before an overwhelming crowd.

The agriculture department steps up measures to firmly deal with the army worms which wreak huge havocs in many parts of the state. In a letter to District Agricultural Officers and other officials, the department said that army worms or swarming caterpillars have manifested in different areas of the State. Steps like deployment of spraying squads in affected areas have been directed.
