Congress leader and Nazira MLA Debobrata Saikia has demanded a special assembly session to discuss the vexed Nagalim issue. Talking to Assam Times, the CLP leader said a section of the people from Nagaland has been trying to grab plots on the territory of Assam in the name of the greater Nagalim. Veteran Congress leader in Nazira Tonkeshwar Saikia breath his last at his own residence of Nazira Simaluguri on Thursday. He was 81 and survived by his wife, two sons and one daughter. Saikia, the elder brother of former Assam chief minister Hiteswar Saikia died of prolonged illness. Many political leaders, organizations and individuals have deeply condoled his death. Veteran Left leader and former MLA Drupad Gohain condoled the death of the octogenerian social workers.
71th Independence Day was observed with traditional gaity and flavour in different places of Nazira Sub division.  The  main event was held at Nazira playground, where civil administration  organised the Independence Day with a day long programme. SDO(C) Dr. Sadnek Singh hoisted the National Flag after swahid tarpan at Nazira Gandhi Maidan. A friendly football match was also held between Civil Administration 11 and Media 11, where civil  administration 11 won by 5-0 goals. 
Hundreds of people hit the streets in Nazira alleging anti people policies of the BJP led government at the state and Centre. Led by Congress MLA Debobrata Saikia, the protestors thronged in front of the SDO (Civil) office in the town and shouted slogans against the central and state government.
