Senior Congress leader Debabrata Saikia on Friday filed his nomination for the fourth time from the Nazira Assembly constituency, seeking to once again represent the region in the Assam Legislative Assembly. He submitted his papers at the Sivasagar District Commissioner’s office amid a large show of support.
The newly restructured 97 No. Nazira constituency covers key areas including Nazira, Amguri rural block, Nazira municipal area, Simaluguri, and Amguri municipal block. The nomination rally drew hundreds of supporters from diverse communities, notably members of the tea tribe community. The procession turned festive with traditional performances such as Jhumur and Bihu, accompanied by drums and other musical instruments, energizing the streets of Sivasagar.
Several senior Congress leaders were present during the filing, including Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president and Lok Sabha Deputy Leader Gaurav Gogoi, AICC General Secretary Vikas Upadhyay, and Sivasagar District Congress president Ajay Gogoi.
Addressing the gathering, Gaurav Gogoi launched a strong attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), claiming the party would be “wiped out” from Sivasagar district. He said a “new era” would begin in Assam with the end of what he described as the “autocratic rule” of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and alleged that the BJP is unsettled by the growing opposition alliance.
Meanwhile, Debabrata Saikia, who also serves as the leader of the Congress Legislative Party, echoed similar sentiments. He alleged that the BJP’s “misrule” would soon end and claimed the party is increasingly nervous about opposition unity. Responding to speculation about a possible switch to the BJP, Saikia stated he would only consider such a move if the party adopts Congress ideals, respects the Constitution, and upholds secular values. He, however, expressed skepticism, accusing the BJP of undermining constitutional principles and promoting communal politics.
