Shameful arrest: Assam education minister Ripun Bora was arrested by CBI in Delhi on June 3 while he was trying to bribe one of its officials who was probing into the sensational Danial Topno murder case.

The Second Coming: The breakaway group of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) along with PLP united to bolster the regional politics. Both the AGP factions reunited on October 4 at the regional party’s general convention at Golaghat.

Farewell to arms: The cadres of A and C companies of ULFA’s crack unit ie 28th battalion announced an unilateral ceasefire on June 24 citing their aim at ensuring talk between ULFA and government.

String of clash: At least 55 people were killed more than two lakh people rendered homeless at the height of a communal riot that rocked Udalguri and Darrang districts of lower Assam during the first week of October.

First time first chance: Kalpana Chaudhury of Assam wowed the Asian countries striking gold at the first ever Asian Women Boxing Championship in Guwahati kickstarted on September 24.

Violence atop the hills: At least 35 people were killed by DHD(J) outfit in a string of attack in North Cachar hills district in the first week of June.

Pride of Assam: Sahitya Akedemy Award to Dr Rita Chaudhury and Vidyasagar Narzary in the third week of December.

Acknowledgment: Dada saheb phalke awardee Dr Bhupen Hazarika awarded the firs ever Assam Ratna award by the Assam government.

End of an era: Noted singer and cultural icon Dilip Sarma passed away in the first week of October.

AJYCP to observe August 4 as Black Day

For the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad, August 4 will be a Black day. The student body is going to do it in protest against the government’s failure to rein in the stepped up activities of the fundamentalist forces in the state. Evening shootouts: Panchayat body president killed in Amguri

Two people were killed in two separate incidents in Assam on Tuesday night. A Panchayat body president in Amguri in upper Assam’s Sivasagar district, Hemanta Baruah was shot dead by a few miscreants near his resident Haluwating at around 10 at night on Tuesday. Police have yet to ascertain the reason. In yet another incident, one Himanshu Das, 42 years, was killed by unidentified assailants on Tuesday evening at Kumargaon, 8 kilo metres from Sarbhog police station in Barpeta district. In a response, the likes of which we have not seen in the last few decades, both the Government of Uttarakhand and the Government of India responded to 76 years old Dr. G. D. Agarwal's fast-unto-death. The overall flood situation in Assam continues to remain critical on Wednesday as some more areas are reeling under the flood waters of the river Brahmaputra and its tributaries rendering as many as four lakh people homeless in seven districts. An uneasy situation is prevailing in Dhubri district for a string of untoward incidents that took place when All Koch Rajbanshi Students Union was running its 1000 hour economic blockade in the lower Assam district. Assam flood situation continues to remain grave

The over all flood situation in Assam remains critical with the flood waters of the mighty Brahmaputra and its tributaries are spilling into some more areas. Lakhs of people marooned after the breach of the Matmoira dyke in Lakhimpur district are still staying in the makeshift camps and relief and rescue operations are in progress. But the rescue operation is facing a great deal of difficulties due to lack of adequate number of boats.
