The Assam Foundation of North America (AFNA) program 'Sponsor a Child' started off with a meeting at Snehalaya Guwahati. Debojit Bora of AFNA talked in detailed about this project. The meeting was attended by 1) Parijat Academy, 2) Asha Darshan-Tamulpur, 3) sSTEP, Society for Social Transformation and Environmental Protection 4) Atma Nirbhar-Ek Challange, Guwahati and 5) SHED , a rehab centers for Mentally Retarded & Autistic children in, Beltola , Guwahati . Bidyananda Barkakoty of Friends of Assam and Seven Sisters , Guwahati graced the meeting and offered all assistance for the successful completion of this project.
Also present was a four year old boy Bishal Acharya accompanied by his grand father Tarun Sarkar. This innocent child Bishal lost his father Sujit Acharya (age 31 yrs) during the Guwahati bomb blast on October 30, 2008 at Ganeshguri. Late Acharya was the only earning member of this lower middle class family. Bishal's mother, Reeta Acharya (age 26 years), a housewife is still in the grip of shock and trauma. Bishal will start his education from January 2009 and has taken admission in Ideal Nursery School in Fatasil Ambari area of Guwahati. AFNA is going to sponsor the educational cost of this child.

I do not have much knowledge about AFNA but I know a little about Sehalaya.... I know the organisatoin is doing a lot for the street children....I am just crazy to be a part of it.... its mean a lot for me....I also want to be part of Snehalaya..........

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said Assam has developed on all fronts. In his address at the anniversary function at Sarusajai function on Saturday, Gogoi said that the state now ranks in third position in the human resources development index. He said the state has set record the food grain production during his regime and that in health, education sectors also the state has changed its face.
Amid total and peaceful bandh the Tarun Gogoi government on Saturday observed its first anniversary of the third term where Congress president Sonia Gandhi praised the Chief minister. In a mammoth rally at the Sarusajai stadium, Gandhi urged the ULFA’s anti-talk faction to join the national mainstream. She said that the peace is back to the state only during the Tarun Gogoi regime where more and more insurgent outfits shunned the path of violence.
The ULFA sponsored statewide shutdown call ended peacefully on Saturday. ULFA’s the anti- talk faction led by Paresh Baruah to gave the call to oppose Sonia Gandhi’s visit to participate in the first anniversary function of the Gogoi Government.
The group also triggered a bomb blast in Tinsukia district Friday night killing one person. Amid tight security arrangements, Gandhi, as scheduled, addressed a huge gathering at Sarusojai stadium. A 27 years old youth was found dead at Landakhunda village, bordering Assam-Meghalaya, under Dhupdhara police station in Goalpara district early in the morning today. The youth was shot dead by unidentified gunmen as two marks of bullet holes on his chest. The body was found lying on a village road with both of his hands were tightened with his own shirt. National Investigation Agency got remand of Maoist leader Indranil Chandra, alias Ajay Das for seven days after he was produced before a special court in Guwahati on Wednesday. Chandra, who heads Maoist offensive in Assam, was brought to Guwahati from Kolkata where he was recently arrested. He was produced in a NIA designated court in Guwahati and remanded to seven days of NIA custody. Chandra, hailing from Burdwan district of West Bengal, had visited the state several times to coordinate with the local Maoist cadres. He had visited several areas in the state, including lower Assam, and held several meetings.
