Teacher Surplus, Falling Enrolment Plague Nazira Primary Schools; RTI Reply Raises Questions

Despite having nearly a thousand teachers on its rolls, as many as 319 Lower Primary (LP), Middle English (ME), and Middle English schools under the Nazira Primary Education Block are functioning with a total student enrolment of only 27,077, averaging about 84 students per school.

As per official norms, there should be one teacher for every 30 students. Based on this guideline, the total enrolment in the block would require approximately 903 teachers. However, nearly 1,200 teachers are currently posted across these schools, far exceeding the required number.

While schools located in urban and easily accessible areas reportedly have an excess number of teachers compared to student strength, many remote and peripheral schools continue to face an acute shortage of teaching staff. This uneven distribution has adversely affected the overall quality of education. Despite repeated claims and slogans of improvement by the government, the issue remains largely unaddressed.

At the same time, the steady decline in student enrolment in Assamese-medium government schools has emerged as a serious concern. Despite the government spending crores of rupees on infrastructure development and teachers’ salaries, the quality of education has shown little improvement. Consequently, many aware parents are reluctant to enrol their children in these schools. Notably, even teachers working in government schools reportedly prefer to send their own children to private institutions, highlighting the prevailing lack of confidence in the system.

In another significant development, an application filed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005, seeking details of funds allocated and utilised under the Samagra Shiksha scheme for these 319 schools during the previous year, received an unexpected response. The Nazira Block Elementary Education Office reportedly stated that it was unable to provide any information regarding fund allocation or expenditure.

The absence of such crucial financial records at the block office has raised serious questions about transparency and accountability. Furthermore, the department allegedly declined to provide school-wise data on student enrolment and teacher deployment, citing unspecified reasons, fuelling suspicions of deliberate suppression of information.

Observers say that due to such administrative lapses, government schools are steadily losing their educational standards and, in many cases, are functioning in a quasi-commercial manner rather than as service-oriented institutions. As a result, several government schools are being shut down. Continued reluctance by the authorities to share information and ensure transparency, even amid this decline, points towards deeper systemic irregularities within the education administration.

The slow construction of the RCC culvert on B.G. Road at the junction of Changmai and Gohain villages in Singhadwar, Hanhchara of Sivasagar district, has disrupted the daily life of the public and caused immense inconvenience. The temporary diversion road constructed alongside is also slippery and uneven, making it very difficult for vehicles and pedestrians to navigate during rainfall. The B.G. Road, also known as the Sivasagar-Nazira Road, is one of the busiest roads in Sivasagar district, with thousands of vehicles plying on it daily. However, the administration and the Public Works Department seem to be indifferent to the issue. Despite the ongoing construction work under the Assam...

In a glaring example of development failure, several families residing in Ward No. 9 of Borguri village panchayat, under Sapekhati mouza in the Sonari Assembly constituency of Charaideo district, continue to live without electricity. The area, located near the Assam–Arunachal Pradesh border, remains in darkness despite repeated complaints and the state government's promise of universal household electrification. While the Assam government has consistently claimed that electricity connections have been extended to all rural households under its flagship schemes, the ground reality in Borguri tells a different story. Dozens of families still await basic power supply, which affects not just...
The condition of Nazira’s roads, especially the historic Dhodar Ali, paints a grim picture of neglect and governmental indifference. Once a vital arterial road with historical and economic significance, Dhodar Ali is now in a state of disrepair, causing immense hardship to commuters and residents alike. Despite being a region blessed with abundant natural resources—such as coal, oil, and stone—and housing major public sector institutions like ONGC, Nazira has seen little in terms of real infrastructural development. The promises made by elected representatives and departmental officials have failed to materialize, leading to growing frustration among the public. Repeated protests and...

Nazira, 25 June: The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) achieved a significant milestone today in its ongoing well control operations at the RDS site, demonstrating resilience and precision amidst mounting environmental challenges. In a carefully coordinated effort, an extra-long boom crane and a 40-ton crane successfully removed 42 tubing stands from the derrick of the rig. This critical step has paved the way for the safe removal of the rig base from the wellhead — a key advancement in the containment process. Following this, the operation now moves to the next phase: dismantling the existing Blowout Preventer (BOP) and installing a capping stack. ONGC has stated that a...
A section of the under-construction junction drain in Nazira town collapsed on June 22, barely 10–12 days after work had begun, raising serious concerns about the quality of construction and misuse of public funds. Locals have long been demanding a scientifically designed and functional sewerage system, but to no avail. According to sources, the contract for the junction drain was awarded to a BJP worker, further fueling allegations of favoritism and corruption. The construction site...
