A section of the under-construction junction drain in Nazira town collapsed on June 22, barely 10–12 days after work had begun, raising serious concerns about the quality of construction and misuse of public funds.
The incident has exacerbated an already critical situation in Nazira, where residents of Wards 5, 8, and 9 have been battling artificial flooding caused by the municipality’s unplanned drainage systems. Locals have long been demanding a scientifically designed and functional sewerage system, but to no avail.
According to sources, the contract for the junction drain was awarded to a BJP worker, further fueling allegations of favoritism and corruption. The construction site itself is located on land belonging to the Syed family, who have reportedly suffered years of damage to their agricultural land due to contaminated water from municipal drains. The affected families had submitted petitions to the municipality years ago seeking compensation, but no action has been taken.
Eyewitnesses and experts pointed out that instead of adhering to proper engineering guidelines, concrete posts were installed at intervals of 10 meters instead of the standard 10 feet—an apparent attempt to cut costs and siphon off public funds. The lack of a proper plan to channel polluted water further undermines the utility of the project, despite the expenditure of several lakhs of rupees.
Residents are now demanding immediate action to investigate the collapse, ensure accountability, and adopt effective measures to prevent further corruption and infrastructure failure. The incident underscores the urgent need for transparency and long-term planning in Nazira's urban development projects.
