A press conference at the Constitution Club here to release the report “People’s Tribunal on Assam: Evictions, Detentions, and the Right to Belong” was briefly disrupted on Tuesday when members of Hindu Sena and a group from Muzaffarnagar entered the venue shouting slogans. The disturbance lasted around 30 minutes before the event resumed.
Senior advocate Prashant Bhushan, one of the panelists, harshly criticized the government’s role in Assam. He accused authorities of disregarding the rule of law and facilitating forced evictions of Bengali Muslims. Bhushan asserted that the evicted lands were being transferred to corporate entities like the Adani Group and Patanjali, and warned that constitutional institutions are being eroded while independent media is suppressed.
Additional speakers at the event included Harsh Mander, Syeda Hameed, HD Pillai, Wajahat Habibullah, and others, who underlined that the grassroots testimony exposed a constitutional crisis rooted in alleged systemic violations of citizens’ rights in Assam. Police confirmed that no complaint was filed and no arrests were made following the disruption.
