A major controversy is brewing along the Assam–Nagaland border near Bihubar, where rampant illegal stone quarrying has triggered fears for public safety, environmental damage, and the health of nearby residents.
Despite repeated concerns voiced by locals, the forest department and police administration appear to have taken no concrete action, allowing the illegal operations to continue unchecked. Residents allege that the activities—allegedly led by individuals including Riaz Ali alias Nanki, Gazi Khan, and Zakir Ali—are putting the Dikhau river at risk of altering its course, potentially endangering entire settlements.
The so-called “stone mafia” is reportedly using heavy machinery...
The Bokota area in Assam’s Sivasagar district is grappling with one of its worst flood crises in recent years, as the overflowing Disang and Diroi rivers have inundated nearly 35 villages in West Bokota. Local residents, particularly farmers, are reeling under the loss of homes and livelihoods, with no access to basic amenities. Many have expressed frustration over the slow response from authorities, accusing successive governments of neglecting the recurring flood problem.

Despite the government’s much-publicised Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, the market sheds have been reduced to open dustbins, with no visible effort from the authorities to maintain hygiene and infrastructure.
The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), Sapekhati Regional Committee, had earlier submitted a memorandum to the administration and staged protests demanding urgent development of the market sheds. Despite ongoing state-level efforts to remove illegal encroachments, a long-standing case involving the Nazira government hospital remains unresolved for over two decades. The case centers around land belonging to the Nazira health centre—established in 1944—which continues to be illegally occupied even after repeated court interventions.
The hospital, located at the heart of Nazira town, caters to thousands of people from nearby areas. While locals have long demanded its upgrade to a full-fledged healthcare center, expansion efforts are obstructed by encroachment on hospital land. Residents blame the hospital’s managing committee for being weak and inactive, enabling this situation...
