Nazira: The Monday weekly market at Sapekhati is reeling under deplorable conditions, leaving both buyers and sellers in distress. Despite the government’s much-publicised Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, the market sheds have been reduced to open dustbins, with no visible effort from the authorities to maintain hygiene and infrastructure.
The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), Sapekhati Regional Committee, had earlier submitted a memorandum to the administration and staged protests demanding urgent development of the market sheds. However, the appeals have gone unanswered, with no concrete measures taken by the local representatives, the Sapekhati Block Development Officer, or the Charaideo Zilla Parishad.
Frustrated by prolonged neglect, traders have now warned of an indefinite closure of the weekly market if their demands are not met. The poor condition of the sheds has also triggered public health concerns, with stagnant waste and unhygienic surroundings posing a threat to the community.
Residents have expressed anger over the situation, pointing out that the government and Charaideo Zilla Parishad collect substantial revenue from the market each year, yet basic maintenance and cleanliness remain neglected.
The crisis has sparked strong reactions from various quarters, with calls for immediate administrative intervention to restore the market’s infrastructure and ensure a clean, functional space for trade.
