India Leads the City Nature Challenge with 206 Cities Participating

New Delhi: India has emerged as the largest participant in the 9th annual City Nature Challenge (CNC), with 206 Indian cities among the 675 global participants. This collaborative citizen science event, running from April 26 to 29, is organized in India by WWF-India to encourage people to document and share images of wild plants, animals, and fungi using the iNaturalist app.

WWF-India is spearheading this initiative across several states, including Assam, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and New Delhi. Neha Raghav, Director of Environment Education at WWF-India, highlighted CNC's importance, saying, "CNC is a great opportunity to engage people of all ages in citizen science."

In Assam, the event kicked off on Earth Day with youth from various colleges and universities conducting BioBlitzes. Participating institutions include Gauhati University and Cotton University. Archita Baruah Bhattacharyya, State Coordinator for WWF-India in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, noted that CNC 2024 has expanded to include the entire North East, with two main cities—Guwahati and Digboi—leading the effort.

Globally, the CNC has seen rapid growth, with the number of participating cities increasing from 450 in 2023 to over 675 in 2024. Last year, CNC saw over 66,000 participants and nearly 1.87 million observations, with Hyderabad emerging as the top Indian city.

To participate in CNC, individuals can find wildlife, take pictures or sound recordings, and upload them to iNaturalist. This collaborative effort not only contributes to scientific research but also raises awareness about biodiversity conservation. Sanjay Singh in Guwahati

Despite differences controversial MP from UP Dr Sanjay Singh will file his nomination on Tuesday as the third choice candidate for the Rajya Sabha polls slated for February 7.He is expected to file the nomination on Tuesday morning after completing the formalities before returning officer in Dispur. ULFA session in Goalpara

ULFA’s pro talk faction is gearing up for the general council meeting on Tuesday.The outfit will hold its session in Goalpara to discuss several unresolved issues. Top leaders of the outfit met in Guwahati on Monday where the agenda of the session got its final shape.Progress of peace process with the Centre and deportation of founder general secretary Anup Chetia are expected to be prominently figured in the meeting.Apart from chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa, vice chairman Pradeep Gogoi, cultural secretary Pranati Phukan, finance secretary Chitraban Hazarika, foreign secretary Sashadhar Chaudhury attended the meeting.

Huge tortoise rescued

A full grown tortoise pulled huge crowd after it was rescued in Guwahati on Monday.Local residents in Hengrabari rescued the animal weighing around 40 kg from a pit in the morning. They informed it to the forest department through police.Later the forest officials took it to the Assam State Zoo. The local residents are looking for another tortoise which is believed to have been hiding in the pit.

Guwahati taps still dry

The deadlock over water supply refuses to die down even 12 hours after the entire Guwahati city plunged into a dearth of potable water. The situation is expected to improve only after the next 72 hours.Public health engineering workers are on strike from 5 in the morning alleging the failure of the government to redress their grievances.The workers on strike have not allowed the hired men to run the water pumps at the Pandu Ghat. They raised their 14 point demands last week threatening strike from Monday. But of no avail forcing them to resort to strike for the next 72 hours.

Hussian Opp candidate!

Hectic confabulations grip the Opposition camp to field a consensus candidate for the Rajya Sabh polls slated for February 7.A close door meet between AGP and AIUDF decided to field veteran journalist Haidor Hussain as the consensus candidate. But still there is hardly any chance for the opposition party. BJP made it clear that they have ideological differences with AIUDF.AGP and AIUDF have jointly urged BJP to reconsider the decision and to help the consensus candidate win.

Speaker’s ire on Handique move

Amid brisk preparation for finalizing Lok Sabha candidates, Assembly Speaker Pranab Gogoi has revealed that he was dead opposed to the move for allowing BK Handique to seek re election.According to sources, Gogoi, whose son is also in the race for ticket from Jorhat, has written to APCC president Bhubneswar Kalita and chief minister Tarun Gogoi not to help the sitting MP get ticket this time.  

Won’t oppose AICC move: CM

Amid widespread resentment over AICC’s move to field UP MP Sanjay Singh in the Rajya Sabha from Assam, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that the party high command has not yet formally allowed him to know the move.But in the same breath, told the reporters in Dispur that he won’t oppose the move. APCC president Bhubneswar Kalita admitted high command’s move to field Dr Singh from Assam.  

LS: BPF to contest 2 seats

BPF will contest in Kokrajhar and Mongoldoi in the Lok Sabha poll and will help Congress win other seats.This was what BPF president Hagrama Mohilary told reporters when he accompanied Biswajeet Daimary for filing nomination for the Rajya Sabha polls. He reiterated a strong alliance with Congress and thanked the alliance for allowing Daimary to be re elected.    

LS poll: APCC panel meets

A brainstorming meeting of the Assam Congress poll panel on Monday will form panels of ticket aspirants for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.To be attended by chief minister Tarun Gogoi and PCC president Bhubneswar Kalita, the meeting is scheduled to take place at 3-30 in the afternoon at the Hotel Greenwoood Resort in Khanapara.The meeting will examine the findings of the observers sent to each of the Lok Sabha constituencies.  

RS: AGP holds crucial meet
