India Leads the City Nature Challenge with 206 Cities Participating

New Delhi: India has emerged as the largest participant in the 9th annual City Nature Challenge (CNC), with 206 Indian cities among the 675 global participants. This collaborative citizen science event, running from April 26 to 29, is organized in India by WWF-India to encourage people to document and share images of wild plants, animals, and fungi using the iNaturalist app.

WWF-India is spearheading this initiative across several states, including Assam, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and New Delhi. Neha Raghav, Director of Environment Education at WWF-India, highlighted CNC's importance, saying, "CNC is a great opportunity to engage people of all ages in citizen science."

In Assam, the event kicked off on Earth Day with youth from various colleges and universities conducting BioBlitzes. Participating institutions include Gauhati University and Cotton University. Archita Baruah Bhattacharyya, State Coordinator for WWF-India in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, noted that CNC 2024 has expanded to include the entire North East, with two main cities—Guwahati and Digboi—leading the effort.

Globally, the CNC has seen rapid growth, with the number of participating cities increasing from 450 in 2023 to over 675 in 2024. Last year, CNC saw over 66,000 participants and nearly 1.87 million observations, with Hyderabad emerging as the top Indian city.

To participate in CNC, individuals can find wildlife, take pictures or sound recordings, and upload them to iNaturalist. This collaborative effort not only contributes to scientific research but also raises awareness about biodiversity conservation. Happy to represent Assam

Bomb blast in Sivasagar

A powerful grenade explosion has left one person injured in Sivasagar town on Tuesday.The explosion took place at a house in Station Chariali at around 11 in the morning. Identified as Raju Ali, the injured has lost one of his hands under the impact of the explosion.The bomb was believed to have been brought to explode on the Republic day and was kept inside the house.Security forces rushed to the spot and sent the injured Ali to the Assam Medical College Hospital.         

Singh files nomination

Despite widespread resentment in the rank and file of Congress, Sanjay Singh filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha poll slated for February 7.Singh submitted his nomination papers in presence of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, APCC president Bhubneswar Kalita along with several ministers and Congress leaders before returning officer Gauranga Prasad Das. Singh is the party’s first choice candidate.

Kalita third choice

APCC president Bhubneswar Kalita filed his nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha polls and the third choice candidate on Tuesday.Kalita filed his nomination in presence of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, parliamentary affairs minister Nilomoni Sen Deka, Rekibuddin Ahmed, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma along with several ministers and Congress leaders before returning officer Gauranga Prasad Das.However, Kalita’s safe passage meets with increasing difficulties as the Opposition camp is fielding Haidor Hussain a consensus candidate.

Addl SP killed in encounter

An additional superintendent of police was among two were killed in an encounter with NDFB-S in Sonitpur district on Tuesday.The encounter took place at Batashipur in Dhekiajuli along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh interstate border where additional SP Guljar Hussain and a policeman were killed. At least 6 other policemen were injured and they were shifted to the nearest hospital.Hussain has left behind a 3-year-old daughter and a 15 days old infant son.

Bombs seized in Goalpara

Goalpara police seized five crude bombs from a house on Tuesday.The bombs were kept inside a house to be recovered during an operation conducted acting on the confessional statements of the ULFA militant recently captured in Guwahati.  

Lady ULFA leader dead!

A lady ULFA leader is believed to have died under mysterious circumstances in Myanmar camp. She was none other than Anju Saikia alias Dalimi Dutta who hailed from Gaurisagar in Sivasagar district.But there is no confirmation either from ULFA or from the police. Police officials in Gaurisagar are tightlipped on the inputs even three days after the sad news spread like wildfire. Even the bod of the ULFA cultural secretary has yet to be spotted.But sources told Assam Times that police got to know the incident a couple of days. But they have no official confirmation.
