India Leads the City Nature Challenge with 206 Cities Participating

New Delhi: India has emerged as the largest participant in the 9th annual City Nature Challenge (CNC), with 206 Indian cities among the 675 global participants. This collaborative citizen science event, running from April 26 to 29, is organized in India by WWF-India to encourage people to document and share images of wild plants, animals, and fungi using the iNaturalist app.

WWF-India is spearheading this initiative across several states, including Assam, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and New Delhi. Neha Raghav, Director of Environment Education at WWF-India, highlighted CNC's importance, saying, "CNC is a great opportunity to engage people of all ages in citizen science."

In Assam, the event kicked off on Earth Day with youth from various colleges and universities conducting BioBlitzes. Participating institutions include Gauhati University and Cotton University. Archita Baruah Bhattacharyya, State Coordinator for WWF-India in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, noted that CNC 2024 has expanded to include the entire North East, with two main cities—Guwahati and Digboi—leading the effort.

Globally, the CNC has seen rapid growth, with the number of participating cities increasing from 450 in 2023 to over 675 in 2024. Last year, CNC saw over 66,000 participants and nearly 1.87 million observations, with Hyderabad emerging as the top Indian city.

To participate in CNC, individuals can find wildlife, take pictures or sound recordings, and upload them to iNaturalist. This collaborative effort not only contributes to scientific research but also raises awareness about biodiversity conservation. Yet another AGP leader is likely to join BJP. He is none other than Padma Hazarika who is yet to make up his mind.Hazarika, who was suspended from the party for anomalies in the Rajya Sabha voting last month, has received formal proposal from the party. BJP legislator Ranjit Dutta on Friday morning met the Sootea MLA where the proposal was conveyed.Very recently, his supporters have Hazarika the free hand to join wherever he likes. But of late, the AGP leadership have hint of withdrawing the suspension order against him.      
Finally BJP has made up its mind. The Opposition party has announced the name of Joiram Englang as the candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in Diphu seat. The announcement came from New Delhi on Friday morning nearly a week after the Congress leader in Karbi Anglong joined BJP.England left Congress after the ruling party announced the name of Biren Singh Engleng as the candidate for Diphu.
Over 50 people have fallen ill after consuming grams at a religious function in Nagaon district on Thursday.They, mostly, complained of stomach ache and started vomiting hours after they consumed Prasad of grams and pulse at a religious function organized at a house in Chapormukh area on Thursday. Security forces seem to have stepped up operation to flush out insurgent elements from Guwahati in the run up to the Lok Sabha polls.Police and CRPF jawans held a NDFB-S militant during a search operation in the city on Friday.The militant was captured at a sudden raid conducted at a hotel in Panbazar on Friday wee hours. Police claimed to have seized a made in America pistol along with a magazine from his possession.      
In a stepped up operations against miscreants, security forces captured three armed youths in the outskirt of Guwahati on Friday.The three armed youths who are believed to be the NDFB-S linkmen were held in Khetri in the wee hours. Police interrogation is going on.
Several political heavyweights are set to file their nomination papers on the last day on Friday for the first phase of Lok Sabha poll slated for April 7.They include BJP state president Sarbananda Sonowal and his Congress counterpart Ranee Narah in Lakhimpur. Union minister and Congress candidate Pawan Singh Ghatowar is also set to file nomination papers on Friday in Dibrugarh.They are apart from Mani Kumar Subba, the Congress leader who will file nomination to contest as independent candidate in Tezpur.

After a brief lull, miscreants are back in action in BTAD. A woman sustained serious injury when unidentified miscreants fired upon her on Thursday.The incident took place at Gossaigaon Tiniali when three unidentified youths fired upon a women as she was sitting at her veranda at around 7 in the evening.Then they vanished from the spot before the arrival of policemen who are fanning out in the area to nab the culprit.Identified as Kamala Goala, the injured woman was immediately rushed to the hospital.
