India Leads the City Nature Challenge with 206 Cities Participating

New Delhi: India has emerged as the largest participant in the 9th annual City Nature Challenge (CNC), with 206 Indian cities among the 675 global participants. This collaborative citizen science event, running from April 26 to 29, is organized in India by WWF-India to encourage people to document and share images of wild plants, animals, and fungi using the iNaturalist app.

WWF-India is spearheading this initiative across several states, including Assam, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and New Delhi. Neha Raghav, Director of Environment Education at WWF-India, highlighted CNC's importance, saying, "CNC is a great opportunity to engage people of all ages in citizen science."

In Assam, the event kicked off on Earth Day with youth from various colleges and universities conducting BioBlitzes. Participating institutions include Gauhati University and Cotton University. Archita Baruah Bhattacharyya, State Coordinator for WWF-India in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, noted that CNC 2024 has expanded to include the entire North East, with two main cities—Guwahati and Digboi—leading the effort.

Globally, the CNC has seen rapid growth, with the number of participating cities increasing from 450 in 2023 to over 675 in 2024. Last year, CNC saw over 66,000 participants and nearly 1.87 million observations, with Hyderabad emerging as the top Indian city.

To participate in CNC, individuals can find wildlife, take pictures or sound recordings, and upload them to iNaturalist. This collaborative effort not only contributes to scientific research but also raises awareness about biodiversity conservation. AGP fields BK Nath in Silchar

Its final. AGP has fielded Bijay Krishna Nath in Silchar. Poachers killed in Kaziranga

Two dreaded rhino poachers were killed at a fierce gun battle with forest guards in Kaziranga on Saturday.The encounter took place at around 6 in the evening at Aarimora forest camp in Kohora range.The poachers were believed to have been killed on the spot during the gun battle that lasted for nearly one hours.Forest guards further claimed to have recovered a rhino horn from the encounter spot.Notably, despite round the clock vigil, poachers have been striking in the national park killing over 15 rhinos during the last three months.      

AIUDF leader likely to join AGP

Yet another AIUDF leader is trying to join AGP. He is none other than Bijay Krishna Nath who was denied ticket from Silchar.Nath, the owner of a Bangla daily met party top leaders including president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta on Saturday.The former AIUDF leader is believed to have agreed to join the regional party provided he is fielded from Silchar in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.Notably, Nath resigned from AIUDF immediately after the party fielded Dr Pervez Ali Ahmed from Silchar.

Gogoi lambasts Ajmal

Amid allegations of secret poll pact between Congress and AIUDF, chief minister Tarun Gogoi severally criticized Badaruddin Ajaml saying that the AIUDF president is not concerned with the issues confronting the people.Addressing a huge poll rally in Dhubri on Saturday, Gogoi called Ajmal an imported personality and that the scent of his perfume is momentary.He said that only Congress would be able to deliver the goods.   

Another AAP nomination rejected

Yet another AAP candidate won’t be able to contest in the upcoming Lok Sabha poll.Tezpur returning officer has rejected the nomination papers of Aam Admi Party candidate during the scrutiny on Saturday.According to sources, the nomination papers have been rejected because of some anomalies found during the scrutiny. All other nomination papers have been found valid.With this, the number of contesting candidates in Dibrugarh is 10.

AAP candidate nomination rejected

Dibrugarh returning officer has rejected the nomination papers of Aam Admi Party candidate during the scrutiny on Saturday.According to sources, Tapan Sudbanshi’s  nomination papers have been rejected because of a glaring mistakes in the voter numbers of his proposer and seconder.  Other nomination papers are have been found correct and valid.With this, the number of contesting candidates in Dibrugarh is 7. Polling will take place on April 7.

Action imminent on Subba

Its confirm. Congress will expel Mani Kumar Subba who will contest independently from Tezpur.Disclosing this in Jorhat, APCC president Bhubneswar Kalita said that Subba would be expelled in a day or two for refusing to toe on the party line in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.The three time Congress MP on Friday filed nomination papers before the returning officer in Tezpur to contest as an independent candidate.

Bihali ghost revisits

Miscreants from Arunachal Pradesh are still unleashing terror in the Bihali area of Sonitpur district.The miscreants from the neighbouring state on Friday night attacked a buffalo camp in Bihali and sprayed several rounds of bullets to terrorize the local residents.Over 10 buffalos have sustained injury in the midnight attack forcing police to step in.The incident assumes significance hardly two months after the miscreants shot dead 15 people at a camp in Chauldhuwa.
