Youth Leaders in Assam Trained to Combat Plastic Pollution

In a bid to empower the youth against the perils of single-use plastics, the UNEP Tide Turners Plastic Challenge made significant strides in Assam. The WWF-India, alongside UNEP, orchestrated a pivotal Teachers’ Training Program on December 19th, 2023, at Maharishi Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School in Silpukhuri.

This initiative, a global endeavor ongoing since 2019, aims to cultivate leadership qualities among the youth to combat the menace of plastic pollution. WWF-India has taken the helm as the knowledge and implementing partner, customizing and executing the program's intricacies across the country.

The training session witnessed the active participation of teachers from 37 schools in Guwahati. It commenced with a ceremonial lamp lighting by esteemed guests, including Shri Lakhan Lal Meena, CBSE RO for North East region, who lauded WWF's multifaceted efforts. Smt. Manika Goswami, Principal of Maharishi Vidya Mandir Silpukhuri, shared inspiring accounts of the school's prior engagements with WWF programs.

The core of the training revolved around the Tide Turner’s Plastic Challenge, elucidating its three-tiered approach encompassing knowledge acquisition, personal action, and community outreach. Mrs. Archita B. Bhattacharyya, leading the program, engaged teachers through interactive sessions and activities, fostering a sense of ownership and influence over plastic pollution issues.

The program spotlighted success stories like Anusweta Deb, a local Tide Turner Champion from Hailakandi, Assam, whose innovative plastic-bottle life jackets saved lives during floods, igniting motivation among the participants.

As part of the culmination, participants were equipped with TTPC Toolkits, posters, and bookmarks, arming them to propagate the cause further. The event urged schools and individuals aged 11-35 years to register for the Tide Turner Plastic Challenge via the link provided, emphasizing the critical role of youth in combatting plastic pollution.

This training session not only ignited a spirit of change but also fostered a network of enthusiastic educators ready to steer their students towards a plastic-free future, echoing the power of collective action in safeguarding the environment.

Stand united under same flag: Akhil to regional parties

Peasant leader Akhil Gogoi urged anti BJP parties and forces to remain united. Talking to reporters at the GMCH premises after his routine check up on Monday, Gogoi said that all parties including the proposed regional parties by the All Assam Students Union should stand tall under one flag to beat BJP in the 2021 assembly poll. Congress pins hopes on NYAY to woo voters

Guwahati: State Congress president Ripun Bora says if the party comes to power it would implement NYAY scheme where BPL families will receive Rs 7500 in a month. Addressing a press conference in Guwahati on Saturday, Bora NYAY will challenge Aronodoy scheme, which the government launched recently promising Rs 830 in a month to 17 lakh poor families.       Bora further said that the BJP-led government announced a slew of schemes despite bad financial condition just to woo the voters for 2021 assembly polls.

Prafulla Kr Mahanta ailing

Guwahati: AGP leader and former CM Prafulla Kumar Mahanta is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Guwahati. Mahanta, the 2 term Chief Minister was admitted in the hospital following his heart ailment. ULFA-I opposes Durag puja during endemic

Guwahati: The United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA-1) has strongly opposed the government’s permission to observe Durga puja during the endemic period and called it an attempt to appease the Hindus. In a statement, the proscribed outfit said that the government denied the permission to hold the much-vaunted Bohag Bihu apprehending spread of the killer virus and now has relaxed the protocols to observe the Durga puja. 

3 more autonomous councils coming up

Guwahati: Sensing backlash in the upcoming assembly polls because its failure to ensure ST status for 6 ethnic communities, the Assam Government has announced three autonomous councils for 3 ethnic communities. State minister Chandan Brahma moved a bill for autonomous councils for Muttock, Moran and Koch Rajbanshi people which the assembly passed on Thursday. But the government, according to sources, is contemplating to appease the Ahom, Adivashi and Chutiya people since they were desperately struggling for ST status.

Bail for Devangana in Delhi

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday granted bail to Debangana Kalita three months after the police arrested the JNU researcher alleging involvement in the orgy of violence in the north eastern parts of the national capital. A bench of the court of Justice SK Kite, which heard the petition was not convinced by the evidence produced by Delhi police before the court justifying her arrest.
