Populist measures in the time of lockdown

Guwahati: In a bid to give some sort of respite in the time of nationwide lock down, the Assam government is launching a slew of schemes targeting 72 lakh families in the state.

Presided over by CM Sarbananda Sonowal, the meeting resolved provide free rice for 58 lakh families under the National Food Security (NFS) Scheme  from Wednesday.

This is in addition to Rs 1000 each to the poor families whom NFS Act has not covered. The meeting allowed the trucks ferrying essentials commodities to enter into the State from Wednesday.

Tea gardens will start resuming operations from the same day. But the authorities will have to follow the rules of the health department.  Same rules would be applicable while the rice mills, biscuit factories, etc., will be resuming.
