Rare honour for NE physician Dr Goswami

Guwahati: The American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) has honoured Dr Bhabadev Goswami, a leading Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist of northeast India, with its prestigious fellowship. The former head of the Department Gastroenterology in Gauhati Medical College and presently attached to city-based Dispur Hospitals, Dr Goswami becomes the first gastroenterologist from NE to be elected for the fellowship.

He is among five gastroenterologists from India this year for the fellowship offered by ACG, which is recognized as one of the largest bodies of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in the world. Enriched with over 14000 members hailing from 46 countries, ACG honours few physicians, who make a significant impact in the field of gastroenterology, electing them for the fellowship every year.

Other Indian physicians, who advanced to fellowship this year from the Bethesda (Maryland) based association, include Dr Sunil Kumar Dadhich, Dr Bhavesh J Patel, Dr Vijay Sharma and Dr Manish Thapar. The list of ACG fellows also comprises Dr Muhammad Adnan, Dr Muayad A. Alkhafaji, Dr Allan W. Barbish, Dr Steven Batash, Dr Scott A. Berger, Dr Tyler M. Berzin, Dr Muhammad B. Bestari, Dr Cherif Boutros, Dr Milutin M. Bulajic, Dr Seshadri Chandrasekar, Dr Mohamad Ali Eloubeidi, Dr Linda A. Feagins, Dr Bhabadev Goswami, Dr Dominique E. Howard, Dr John J. Kim, Dr Anas Kutait, Dr Joann A Kwah, Dr Jeffrey T. Laczek, Dr Marcelo F. Larsen, Dr Anand Madan, Dr Jose R. Martin, Dr Norman D. Miller, Dr Aldo J. Montano-Loza, Dr Samantha Nazareth, Dr Ramona O. Rajapske, Dr Michael R. Raphael, Dr James A. Richter, Dr Anish M. Shah, Dr Raj J. Shah, Dr Vignesh Shivakumar, Dr Manish B. Singla, Dr Serge A. Sorser, Dr Matthew N. Thoma, Dr David W. Already a fellow of Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy of India (SGEI), Dr Goswami is also an international member of ACG, American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) and European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL).

Recipient of Economic Times Inspiring Gastroenteritis of India award in 2018, Dr Goswami has more than 45 national and international publications, who has made several scientific presentations in and outside the country.

Narrow escape for 250 IITians

At least 250 IITians had a narrow escape when the ferry carrying them struck on the river Brahmaputra on Saturday.According to reports, the ferry which brought them back to North Guwahati from a picnic spot suddenly struck at sand in the middle of the mighty river. The wind that blew in the afternoon compounded the problem.It needed the rescue team and the ferry men three hours to bail out the IIT students from the jaws of death.           

Jorhat lady lawyer arrested

In a yet another incident that strikes the attention of the state’s legal fraternity, a lady lawyer has been sent to police custody for allegedly misbehaving with a judicial magistrate in Jorhat district on Saturday.It took place in Titabor in the morning when the sub divisional judicial magistrate ordered arrest of a lady lawyer alleging that she misbehaved with him as she conducted a case of bail petition.After heated arguments, the magistrate issued an arrest warrant against the lawyer alleging misbeviour and disturbing in the functionings. Uncertainty over Rahul rally

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Thursday asserted that he would keep helping the poor people.Talking to reporters at the Assembly premises after countering the Opposition on the vote on account, Gogoi said that helping poor people has no hidden motive.“If the Opposition calls it the politicization practice on the poor people and criticize me,  I have no way out,” he said adding that the proposals in the vote on account are not poll oriented.

In a bizarre case that embroils in mystery, Nepal police have released two dreaded KLO leaders 10 days after the duo were picked up.Identified as Tom Adhikary and Nilambor Singh, the most wanted militants were feed on Friday. Strangely, the West Bengal police are tightlipped on the controversy.The duo were picked up along the Indo-Nepal border on February 4.       

2 killed in road mishap

Two persons died and four others have been injured at a tragic road mishap in Tezpur on Saturday.The incident took place in the morning at Bihoguri area where the vehicle bound for Guwahati carrying them rammed into a post.Identified as Anowar Hussian, Ratan Biswas were killed on the spot while the injured have been rushed to the Tezpur Civil Hospital.

Elephant terror revisits Demow

A hard of wild elephants has been unleashing a reign of terror in Demow during the last couple of days.One person was trampled to death by wild elephants on Friday night sending shock and anger against the forest department in the entire area.The incident took place at Chitolia where wild elephants trampled to death a local villagers Rajen Doley at night.Local residents told Assam Times that despite repeated appeal the forest department has done precious little to curb the menace.
