Halcyon days of Fishery College in Raha

Esatablished on 1st April in the year 1969 , Assam  Agricultural University , Jorhat ,  is the first institution of its kind in the whole of North-Eastern region of  India. The main goal of the establishment of this  institution is to produce globally competitive human resources in farm sector and to carry out research in both conventional and frontier areas for production optimization as well as to disseminate the generated technologies as public good for benefitting the food growers  and traders involved in the sector while emphasizing on sustainability , equity and overall food security at household level. Since its inception in the year 1969 , the University has produced about 18,000 graduates and post graduates till date. These human resources are rendering yeoman’s service to the state , regional , national and global agriculture in various capacities. 
Before establishment of Assam Agricultural University , there were altogether 17 research schemes / projects in the state under the department of Agriculture , By July 1973 , all the research projects and 10 experimental farms were transferred by the government of Assam to the AAU which already inherited the College  of Agriculture and its farm at Barbheta , Jorhat and College of Veterinary Sciences at Khanapara , Guwahati. Subsequently , College of Home Science at  Jorhat ( 1969 ) , College of Fisheries at Raha ( 1988 ) , Biswanath College of Agriculture at Biswanath Chariali ( 1988 ) and Lakhimpur college of Veterinary Science at Joyhing , North Lakhimpur ( 1988 ) were established. At present , the university has three more colleges under its jurisdiction , i.e. , Sarat Chandra Singha College of Agriculture , Chapar , College of Horticulture , Nalbari  and College of Sericulture , Titabar. The university has comprehensively succeded to carry out agricultural research , teaching and extension in the last 50 glorious years of existence. The university is also striving to serve the farming community of the state through its network of 23 Krishi Vigyan Kendras ( KVKs ) distributed all over the state.
It is worth mentioning here that  AAU Vice Chancellor Dr. K.M. Bujarbaruah received “ Sardar Patel Outstanding Institution Award , 2014” by Indian Council of Agricultural Research ( ICAR ) , New Delhi for its outstanding performance in all spheres of teaching , research , extension , and innovations consecutively for 5 years since 2009 to 2014. He was also awarded the Best  Vice Chancellor Award among all the Agricultural Universities of India , All India Agricultural Students Association , ICAR and University of Agricultural Sciences , Raichur in the year 2017. KVK , Sonitpur of AAU has also recently been coferred the Best Zonal KVK award on 17 th March , 2018 by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi  in New Delhi.
The Assam Agricultural University  is celebrating its golden jubilee year with a year long celebration programme commencing from 1st April this year.  As a part of this celebration ,  College of Fisheries , a constituent college of the university today took out a colourful cultural procession at Raha. More than 100 students , teaching and non-teaching staffs of the college headed by Dr. K. K  Tamuli , Dean , College of Fisheries , Raha participated in the procession where the achievements of the university in the last 50 years was highlighted. In the cultural procession, bihu husori, biya naam, ai naam, jikir and jari, Assamese marriage, gayan-bayan, folk dances of various tribes of Assam and North-East were demonstrated which enthralled the audience.

Nagaon: A team of Flying Squad comprising of Nagaon police and Excise personnel today seized 42 cartoons of foreign liquer at Sialmari from a Tata Magic vehicle bearing no. AS 02 BC 7095. RAHA: A dreaded dacoit died and another sustained serious injury when a gang war took place in Nagaon on Sunday. The incident took place at Nagabandha in the wee hours where a group of armed dacoits were travelling on a vehicle. As they reached Juria suddenly they spotted another gang and started gun firing at each other.  Identified as Jonab Ali, an infamous died on the spot while another sustained serious injury who is fighting to survive at the hospital. NAGAON: A team of chief minister’s anti corruption and vigilance cell is raiding Rockybul Hussain’s properties in Samoguri, Amoni and Puroni Gudam areas on Friday a day after the enquiry in a number of spots in Nagaon town to ascertain the veracity of the allegations of having illegal properties. RAHA: Two minor boys met watery grave when the duo along with a few others were going to bath in a river in Nagaon district on Saturday. The incident took place in Chapormukh area at around 11.30 in the morning as they were bathing on the river Kopili. Suddenly, the river water  current washed Akash Rai  and Mukti Prasad Bora—both studying in Hansora School who failed to bail out of the strong undercurrent. Local residents in large number along with SDRF personnel arrived in the spot and fished out the bodies leaving a pall of gloom in the area.
RAHA: Yet another rape incident in Nagaon sends no less shock and sensation across the state. The victim hails from Jagiroad whom a neighbour took away to the central Assam town and rape inside an auto before dumping her at the Mukut Sarma Road in broad day light.The eyewitnesses rescued the girl and the police have registered a case. A team of Nagaon police is looking for Moinul who allegedly took away the girl and raped inside the vehicle.
RAHA: In a stepped up crackdown across the state against the illegal coal traders, the police in Raha intercepted five coal truck on Tuesday. Acting on a tip off the policeman on the National Highway No 37 seized the five trucks loaded with coal early in the morning. The drivers, who have been detained, confessed to have brought the huge consignment to Guwahati from Jowai in Meghalaya. Interrogation is going on. Despite restrictions on trade and transportation, a section of traders keep dealing in coal these days.
RAHA: A biker died when he lost control over his vehicle before it rammed into the divider on the National Highway No 37 in Raha on Wednesday.The mishap took place at Phulguri in the afternoon when  Amarjyoti Deka, a resident of  Kasomari was riding on his two wheeler which hit the divider. He was rushed to the hospital where he was declared brought dead leaving a pall of gloom in the entire area.
RAHA : The Amsoi police in Nagaon district captured a notorious dacoit on Tuesday years after unleashing no less reign of terror in the entire area.Identified as Dilwar Hussain, he was arrested at Gawani Gaon during a joint operation by Raha  Amsoi and Kampur police in the wee hours.  Police claims to have possessed enough evidence to implicate Dilwar in a number of cases of murder, robbery, shoot out in a huge area of the central Assam district.. JAGIROAD: Amid an escalating shock and anger over the rape and murder incident in Nagaon, the Khetri police in Morigaon district caught a youth for trying to molest a minor girl on Monday. The incident took place at Kahikuchi near the National Highway No 37 on Sunday evening when the Class VI girl was forcibly taken away to a place by a local youth who raped her and left away. The local residents and family members rescued her and moved the police station with a complaint. Acting on the complaint the police have arrested the accused Raufik Ali.
