GUWAHATI: Security forces are fanning in the nook and corner of the state to counter the ULFA(I) and NDFB(S) rebels who are believed to have been preparing to strike in the run up to the Republic Day. Tight vigil is in place at the dense jungles along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh in Tinsukia, Assam-Nagaland border in Sivasagar, Jorhat and Golaghat areas apart from the round-the-clock vigil along the Assam-Meghalaya border in Goalpara district. Army, police and para military forces have been guarding the oil& gas installations, rail lines and vital bridges to thwart the rebel attempts. Vehicles plying on the roads are being minutely checked apprehending the movement of the rebel elements in any form.
The capital city of Guwahati has become a security fortress with army and police concentrating on the Khanapara Veterinary Payground where governor Jagdish Mukhi is hoisting the tricolor and taking salute of the march past by security force, NCC and others. Amid tight security all district and sub divisional headquarters have been gearing up for the red letter day with tight vigil on the spaces where MLAs, ministers and bureaucrats are unfurling the tricolor.
Two dreaded ULFA-I teams headed by Udoy Asom and Drishtri Rajkhowa are learnt to have been planning a massive attack on the security forces in the run up to the red letter day. The huge stretch of areas in the north eastern region bordering Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar and China are under strict surveillance to prevent the rebel elements who have been trying to sneak into the region to monger more trouble with bombs and bullets.
