GUWAHATI: Amid the crucial probe into the APSC scam, the Gauhati High Court on Tuesday rejected the bail petition moved by chairman Rakesh Paul who has been languishing in jail for the last several months.

A disappointed Paul and his legal team now has no option to pin hopes on the Supreme Court for respite. His lawyers, sources, say are moving the apex court challenging the ruling on Tuesday.

A division bench of the court ruled that since the probe into the nefarious cash for job scam has reached a crucial stage, the bail is not advisable for the chairman.

Paul who two months back procured bail from the Supreme Court was rearrested acting on a fresh bribery case registered against him in Bhangagarh police outpost.

Sources told Assam Times that Paul is moving the country's apex court challenging the High Court's ruling on Tuesday.

Dispur firm on ST status

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that the state government would continue its fight to get ST status for six communities in the state.Talking to reporters on Monday, Gogoi said that his government woud be fighting for the ST status for the six communities saying that it was a legitimate demand.He said the Centre has not rejected the proposal. Land deal to benefit Assam!

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is firm on his stand on the land-swap deal with Bangladesh.Talkin to reporters in Guwahati on Monday, Gogoi said that 665 acre of state land was under the possession of the neighbouring country since Independence.He said, "we are working on this and now we will get back 397.5 acres from them."

RI for two officers

Two Assam government officers were sentenced to seven years Rigorous Imprisonment for their involvement in the PDS rice scam.Tinsukia Chief Judicial Magistrate N S Deori sentenced former Kakopathar Block Development Officer Alizur Rehman Bora and Extension Officer Kshitij Kakati to seven years RI along with a fine of Rs 50,000 each. The duo were convicted for selling PDS rice, meant to be sold to BPL section at Rs two, at Rs 12-14 in 2007.

Absu ends hunger strike

The All Bodo Students’ Union finally ended its indefinite hunger strike with lemon water from the hands of Mangalsing Narzary.The decision was taken after the Centre invited them for tripartite talks on September 4. ABSU president Pramod Boro declared  withdrawal  of  their 52 hr long indefinite hunger strike on Saturday . The student leaders  now expects the Centre to show their sincerity on the issue and will not tolerate any kind of conspiracy.

Food poisoning revisits

At least 40 people have fallen ill after consuming food at a religious function near Hajo in Kamrup district on Saturday. The individual religious  function took place at a house on Friday night. After the puja, the invitees consumed 'prasad' and started complaining of uneasiness. Over 40 people suffered from vomiting and loose motion. Altogether 10 persons have been released from the hospital while 30 others are undergoing treatment.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Friday reviewed the state’s overall security scenario a day after ULFA struck at Mangoldoi police station.The meeting is believed to have decided to step up offensive against the insurgent outfits in the state.Apart from DGP Jayanta Narayan Chaudhury, ADGP, IGP, Chief secretary were also attended the meeting. Meanwhile, police have picked up four persons in this connection.
