Rishang Keishing laid to rest

Manipur on Thursday paid homage to former Chief Minister and Congress veteran leader Rishang Keishing at his funeral held at his Mantripukhri private residence here. 

Rishang Keishing breathed his last on August 22 at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal. He was 96.  He is survived by his wife Khatingla Keishing, three sons and one daughter. 

He was given a proper burial by the state at his residence. Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh led his council of ministers, opposition MLAs, includidng Okram Ibobi Singh, at the funeral event. 

A contigent of 1st Manipur Rifles gave gun salute to the late grand old man of Manipur on the occasion which was attended by several top police officials. A two-minute silence was observed as a mark of respect to Rishang Keishing.

CM Biren stated, “Rishang was a leader who worked for Manipur irrespective of community.”

The funeral was earlier arranged at his native village Bungpa Khullen of Ukhrul district but it was reportedly barred from being held by a militant group. But Biren Singh said no such incident was officially confirmed. 

Keishing represented UKhrul district's Phungyar, an assembly segment, for seven terms till 2002. He became Chief Minister of Manipur four times and had served as an MP for 22 years. The oldest Parliamentarian of the country retired from public life in 2014. 

The Manipur government declared a one-day state holiday and three days mourning period after Rishang Keishing’s death.   

A state funeral for the former leader was held at MBC Centre Church, Chingmeirong. Former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh and several party leaders joined mourners at the memorial service which was attended by his family and friends. 

The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) also paid homage to late Rishang Keishing at the Congress Bhawan.  

Former Chief Minister and opposition Congress leader Okram Ibobi Singh, former Deputy CM Gaikhangam, MPCC President TN Haokip, MP Th Meinya Singh and several party leaders and workers laid wreaths to the lifeless body of Rishang Keishing on the occasion. 

The Congress leaders mourned his death and the party flag was flown at half-mast in honour of him.  

On the occasion, Okram Ibobi Singh said, “Rishang Keishing was the tallest leader given by God.” 

Rishang’s lifeless body was also brought to Adimjati Ashram where staff and stidents mourned his death and paid last respect to him.

IMPHAL, Mar 14 : In one of the biggest recoveries of contraband items in recent times, troops of 12 Assam Rifles of 26 Sector Assam Rifles apprehended a drug peddler with brown sugar and WY tablets worth approximately Rs 11.96 crore near Tengnoupal on March 13. IMPHAL: The Manipur Legislative Assembly has elected Kongkham Robindro Singh as Deputy Speaker by a voice vote in the ingoing budget session on Thursday. The election was conducted in the Assembly Secretariat where Congress candidate Fazur Rahim was defeated in the voice vote.   The 30-year-old Robindro Singh has become the youngest Deputy Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly. All old petrol and diesel vehicles in the country are set to convert to all-electric vehicles by installing kits by 2020. This was informed to the media by senior scientist Robindro Lairenlakpam from the Indian Institute of Petroleum Council of Scientific and Industrial Research at the Press Club here on Tuesday. He said the plan would be completed by 2020 during which 60-70 lakh old vehicles are to be converted to electric-vehicles. Robindro also informed that this plan is being taken up under the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India.  The Centre has already declared that India will sell only electric vehicles by 2030.

 Drugs worth Rs 3 crore were intercepted here on Saturday by police and arrested a man in connection with the incident. Police said 72,000 pieces of WY tablets and 286 gm of heroin were uncovered from a sand-loaded mini truck around noon. They identified the drug peddler as Nongmaithem Ranjit, 56, son of Dolanjao of Nambol Heikrujam Nongmaithem Leikai within Bishnupur district. The drug haul could have fetched more than Rs 3 crore if it had been allowed to hit the streets. In a move to fend off illegal immigration to Manipur, special police teams have been deployed in border areas of the state, in the wake of publication of National Register of Citizens (NRC) draft in Assam. IMPHAL, Jan 3 (NENA): One cyclist was mowed down and three others were injured in a hit-and-run car accident last night, hitting one person after another in Imphal East’s Hatta and NRL pump at Khurai.   The deceased identified as Thangjam Paka, 56, resident of Khurai Thangjam Leikai, died near Khurai NRL pump after the Santro car hit and dragged him along the road about 100 ft.
