Nazira Press club observes Foundation Day

History is the back-bone of a nation and no nation can thrive without its history,” said Mayur Bora, a well-known writer in a seminar organized by Nazira Press Club on its 26th Foundation Day on Saturday at Nazira. The seminar on “Study of History and the identity crisis of the ethnic people of Assam” was organized in the memory of journalist Pabonath Sarmah and Nilo Guhain with a day-long programme that saw distinguished gathering. Mayur Borah and Rajdip Bailung Baruahwere the chief guests. Both the speakers dwelt at length on the negative effects of globalization and free market economy that has been depriving the ethnic people of their rights on their own land. Hiranya Kumar Bhattachaya, Hemakanta Sarmah, Keshab Borgohain and Prasanta Dutta were felicitated by the Nazira Press Club on the occasion.

A six year old boy in Nazira is battling for life at the Assam Medical College Hospital in Dibrugarh after he was hit by a car on which civil SDO was travelling on Friday.The incident where Abonit Sahu sustained injury took place at Nazira town in the morning when he was trying to cross the road to be hit by the car bearing No AS 04 L 0004 owned by the senior administrative officer.
Noted historian and leading citizen in Nazira Akhil Paniphukan passed away on Friday. The end of the 90 year old Paniphukan came in the wee hours at his own residence in Nazira town. The Nazira unit of All India Krishok Sobha observed its foundation day with a day long programme  at Natiya Mandir on Tuesday.The organization took out a long procession in the town to mark the occasion to be marked by a public meeting the at Nazira Natiya Mandir where Left veterans Durpod Borgohain Kanok Gogoi were also present along with other dignatories. The meeting demanded immediate withdrawal of the move to amend the Land Acquisition Bill 2013 along with measures to prevent erosion in Assam, pension for agricultural labours, solve the unemployed problem and stop privatization move.

Several ethnic groups in Assam are facing identity crisis only because of globalization if Rofikul Hussain Baruah is to be believed.Talking to reporters in Nazira on Tuesday, the renown historian said that the identity of the the indigenous communities including Tai Ahom, Mech Kachari, Deuri, Goria,Moria are on the verge of extinction. He feared that these ethnic communities may lost their own identity in their homeland.According to him, these people have already lost their right over land and resources in all the major cities and towns of Assam. ONGC will start its state-of-the-art hospital in Rajabari in December this year.This was what AASU told reporters in Nazira after a meeting with the oil major officials on Thursday.ONGC officials further agreed to implement other promises in the meeting with AASU leaders in Jorhat.
