Kudos to Dr Bhupen Hazarika as he turns 83

Today is September 8, 2008. Assam is celebrating the 83rd birth day of music legendary music maestro Dr Bhupen Hazarika albeit the birthday boy is in Mumbai. Birthday wishes are pouring in for the pride of Assam and Dada Saheb Phalke award winning singer. Several organization on Monday are celebrating the day across the state.

A special screening of a documentary film on the life and works of, produced by Surjya Hazarika was held at the auditorium of the Assam Handloom and Textiles department office on Sunday. The documentary film titled Bihangam Drishtit Dr Bhupen Hazarika throws light on the life and works of the Phalke awardee.
Many eventful moments of Dr Hazarika’s life have been covered in the film. The English version if the film titled Dr Bhupen Hazarika: A Living Legend was screened at the St Adrews Hall of London south Gate in July last and won accolades from the viewers.

Assam governor JB Patnaik said that the state has made notable progress in the restoration of peace in the state. Opening the budget session of the Assam Assembly on Thursday morning Patnaik said that peace talks are in progress between ULFA and government. he said that more and more insurgent groups were coming forward to join the national main stream. The Supreme Court is expected to decide on the fate of death convict Mahendra Das on Thursday. The country’s apex court is set to deliver the crucial judgment on the Special Leave Petition filed by Mahendra Nath Das where he has pleaded that his death sentence should be commuted to lifer. His mercy petition was rejected by the President after an inordinate delay of 12 years and plea for commutation to life imprisonment on this ground was dismissed by the Gauhati High Court.
Amid tight security, the Assam Assembly begins its budget session from Thursday. The month-long session opens with Governor JB Patnaik’s speech. Sivasagar police have arrested 3 pro talk ULFA cadres on extortion charges in the hear of the town. At least five people sustained injury when suspected ULFA exploded a powerful grenade in Guwahati on Tuesday. The incident took place in front of the Assam state BJP office in the busy Zoo Road at around 6-10 in the evening. The city based NEMCARE Hospital in association with Guwahati Press Club has organized an all women health check-up camp on March 4 next. The health camp will start at 10 am and continue till 2 pm. Organized on the eve of International Women's Day (March 8), the camp will be conducted by a group of lady doctors of the hospital. The basic objective behind the camp is to bring all women journalists and wives of working journalists for an exclusive health check up for gynecological and other related problems of women. The lady journalists and spouses of working journalists are requested to participate in the camp.
