Hundreds take oath to fight against Drugs in Udalguri

The people of several remote villages of Bhergaon in Udalguri district have taken oath to fight drug abuse and illicit trafficking recently on June 26 on the occasion of International day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking,organized by Bhergaon civil administration in association with ROSS and Golden Society NGOs of Tangla.The programme was held at the Gopsachuba High School with picturesque natural surrounding.An awareness rally against drug abuse and illicit trafficking was inaugurated by DN Hazarika,ADC,Udalguri cum i/c SDO (C),Bhergaon sub-division at 9 am.Several hundred students,teachers, villagers and officials participated in the awareness rally which walked through several villages with participants holding play cards and banners saying NO to drugs followed by an awareness meeting at 11 am.The meeting was held at the hall of Gopsachuba High School premises which was presided over by Dibyadjyoti Dutta,Headmaster of the HS. Addressing the awareness meet as the chief guest,DN Hazarika,ADC,Udalguri spoke on the need for creating awareness against drug abuse and illicit trafficking among remote villages bordering India-Bhutan border area,which are badly hit by several social menaces like,drug abuse and illicit trafficking,witch hunting,illegal trafficking of woman,girls,children and even school dropout youths.He also mentioned negative role played by the extremist organizations. Jayanta Das,District Coordinator of Aryabhatta Science Centre,(ASTEC), Udalguri had an interactive session with students present as the appointed speaker.He told people how and why children mostly school dropout students fall victim to drug and trafficking.He requested all not to be persuaded by agents of drug and human traffickers operating in the district.The awareness meeting was also addressed by Dhirendra Nath Kalita,Officer-in-Charge,Tangla police station;Ashim Roy,President and Likhon Das, Secretary of Tangla Nagarik Samiti;senior journalist Ganesh Deka,Dr. Basanta Kumar Daimari,SDMO,Bhergaon;Lalit Boro, president,ROSS NGO,Tangla etc.The meeting feted Samaru Boro,a student of Gopsachuba HS who attended NCSC national session in Maharastra last year  representing as a member of Assam child scientist.School teacher, Ms.Udangshu Brahma also was felicitated for her role as the guide teacher.Before the meet ends,all the people present took an oath to continue life long fight against Drug and Trafficking in the district.

11 people have been injured by a leopard in Bascobari village near Kalbari in Udalguri district this noon.According to information,the full grown leopard had been taking refuge in the wood in the village last night. Seeing the leopard at around 11.30 am today,villagers tried to chase it and in the process eleven people were injured.
