WWF, Shishu Sarothi celebrates World Earth Day

World Earth Day is a global event observed annually on April 22, when events worldwide are held to demonstrate and promote environmental awareness and call for the protection of the planet. It was first celebrated in 1970, and is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network and celebrated in more than 193 countries each year. The Earth Day theme this year is Environmental & Climate Literacy aimed at empowering everyone with knowledge to act in defense of environmental protection. 

WWF-India’s Assam State Office in collaboration with Shishu Sarothi organized a workshop on the occasion to promote the importance of Earth Day among children as well as others. Students of Shishu Sarothi and Shri Aurobindo High School During the event were taught to make wall hangings, thematic poster collage, handicraft items, pen stands, from old newspapers, magazines and compact discs.  Students were also taught the use of old plastic bottles for planting saplings. 

Archita Baruah Bhattacharyya, Coordinator for Assam and AP State office, WWF-India in her brief speech talked about the 3R’s namely Reuse, Reduce & Recycle as the need of the hour for saving the environment. She explained how a small step taken at home can bring about a change in the surroundings and help in reducing waste generation.

WWF-India and Shishu Sarothi volunteers too participated in the event and helped the students in carrying out the scheduled activities. An interactive session was also held and a short animated film on Rhinos of Kaziranga screened during the event.

The main objective of the workshop was to make the special children aware of the environment and biodiversity and inculcate in them love for the Earth. Every year, more than one billion people across the world mark the event by showing support for environmental protection.
