Old couple made to drink human faeces, urine to drive out witch at Raha

A 70-year-old man and his wife was allegedly beaten and forced to consume  human faeces ,  urine after the villagers suspected them to be witch.

The incident happened at Madhya Tupakuchi village , 1 km from Raha Town , on Tuseday afternoon. The 70 year old Tulen Patar  was accused by the villagers of being a witch and alleged that it was due to his presence that many people in the village were falling ill.

“The villagers forced Tulen Patar, a daily wage earner, out of his house around noon on Tuesday , took him  to a field near his house  and started beating him along with his wife . Apart from the inhuman torture meted out to them, they were also made bound to drink urine. The villagers poured a tin of human faeces  on the old man’s body,”  a youth of the village, who requested anonymity,  said to this correspondent.

“He was  beaten and forced to consume 3 glasses of human faeces and urine by  the  villagers. He goes  for work daily and he does not practice Daini ( Witch )” , Lusemai Patar , wife of Tulen Patar said.  “ I was also beaten and forced to drink urine when I came to save my husband from the mob, “ the wife further added.

Later,  the old couple was rescued by police  and admitted to hospital. The old man suffered injuries on his body and waist from the beating and stomach ailments from urine and stool consumption.

It might be mentioned here that in some villages of Raha , people often blame single women, widows or old couples for crop failures , illnesses and natural calamities. The conscious residents of the town have appealed the administration to create awareness programme against witch hunting so that no more such cases would happen in the future.
