Mustard cultivation gets boost in Udalguri

At a time when growing unemployment among educated youths has made them travel to different parts of the country and abroad. A section of educated unemployed youths have chosen cultivation as their way of self-independence .

The traditional farmers of the state after harvesting the rice crops keep their lands barren till next cultivation. A group of unemployed youth of Kacharitol village, Kalaigaon of Udalguri district have shown an exemplary example by cultivation of  traditional mustard cultivation at a stretch of 75 bighas of land to meet the increasing demand of mustard oil. The youths have also sowed Rabi crops along with the mustard cultivation.

The farmers of Udalguri district have been encouraged  to the mustard cultivation, the AAU, Jorhat through its Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) at Udalguri  has succeeded in attracting the young educated youths to choose farming as a self-employment and self-independent profession  to raise mustard cultivation.

According to Udalguri KVK authorities the youths have been provided every possible assistance  for the mustard cultivation ranging from inputs like seeds and fertilizers free of cost, considering the present unemployment status of these youths.

The youths taking lease of land has even cultivated cabbage,pumpkin and peas in a stretch of 25 bighas of land.

The KVK authorities told this correspondent that the main reason of the farmer’s disinterest towards mustard cultivation is unavailability of seeds of high yielding variety. So the KVK decided to supply high yielding variety seeds to boost the  mustard production .The small and marginal farmers of the district are unable to collect these seeds as they are not available locally.

While talking to this correspondent two progressive farmers of Kacharitol village Prafulla Rabha and Mukut Rabha who are a part of twenty youths of the mustard seed cultivation said that they expect a good profit from the cultivation. Interestingly their mustard cultivation has also attracted more farmers towards this profitable crops.
