Ukhrul ADC appeals for Centre intervention to end present crisis

Reiterating its serious concern over the grim situation in the state, the Ukhrul Autonomous District Council has appealed to the Centre for speedy intervention to end the deepening crisis in the backdrop of the Manipur government creating seven new districts and the ongoing indefinite economic blockade imposed by the United Naga Council on national highways.

"People of the state want that the present crisis is resolved at the earliest and we strongly appeal to the Centre Government to intervene and find a solution to the prevailing situation in the state," stated Ukhrul ADC chairman Dr. Yaronsho Ngalung while briefing media persons at his Alungtang residence here on Friday.

According to Ngalung, the present chaotic situation in the state is only created by the state government which declared the seven new districts by overruling various MoUs signed with different Naga civil bodies and without consulting any stakeholders, including HAC. "The state government has clearly committed a constitutional violation."

The chairman then insisted that since both the state government and UNC are at loggerheads, the only way to resolve the current crisis is through intervention by the Centre.

"It is therefore our most fervent appeal to the Centre to arrange trilateral talks involving the Union government, Manipur government and UNC at the earliest," he said.

Reiterating that the 'arbitrary' declaration of the seven new districts by the state government could never be final

decision, Ngalung further urged the Centre to ensure due participation of all the stakeholders in the matter to bring about a permanent solution to the current crisis.

At the same time, executive member of Ukhrul ADC, Isaac has called for prudence on the part of the state government, and asked as to why the government is meting out harsh treatment to the UNC president Gaidon Kamei and his executive Stephen including electric shock when every possibility to end the crisis is being sought by all concerned.

Meanwhile, the Ukhrul ADC administration has, while strongly condemning the December 18 mob attack on Ukhrul bound passengers which left many wounded, has asked the state government to immediately pay adequate compensation for all the damaged/burnt private vehicles and personnel belongings including educational certificates.

In what could be a departure from the past trends, battle for Naga People's Front (NPF) tickets is likely to be either quite rancour-free or nonexistent, at least in two of Ukhrul's three assembly segments. This time around the party leadership is probably going to be free from any hassles in issuing tickets for 45-Chingai assembly constituency as Khashim Vashum of Tusom CV has emerged the lone candidate, so far, to seek the NPF ticket. That Khashim Vashum is emerging as the favourite to get favour of NPF leaders came to the fore when hundreds of his supporters, well wishers and public from contiguous villages of northern Raphei converged at Tusom CV playground and pledged their support for...
