Gangmumei Kamei passes away

Professor Gangmumei Kamei, a member in North Eastern Council (NEC) passed away on Friday at the age 77 years in Imphal. His demise was condoled in a meeting held at the Shillong based NEC Secretariat.

Born in the Manipur capital city on 21 October 1939, Prof Kamei was associated with several socio-cultural organizations in the country. He was a member of the advisory committee of the Anthropological Survey of India (1984-87).

Prof Kamei was awarded the platinum jubilee honour by Manipuri Sahitya Parishad in 2010 for his contribution to the history & tribal culture. He was also honoured with National Fellowship by the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla (2010-2012).

The former president of Northeast India History Association and Manipur History Society, Prof Kamei guided a large number of research projects. He had also published a large number of research papers and books. His major publications include A history of Modern Manipur (1826-2000), A history of Manipur: pre-colonial period, On History and Historiography of Manipur, History of Zeliangrong Nagas: From Makhel to Rani Gaidinliu, Ethnicity and Social change etc.

In his condolence message, the Union minister responsible for development of northeastern States (DoNER) Dr Jitendra Singh commented that Prof Kamei’s contribution to the alienated region would always be remembered.

Dr Singh said that Prof Kamei would not only be remembered as a professor, but also as a writer and historian whose area of specialization was regional history of northeast India and history of Manipur. He added that passing away of Prof Kamei leaves a vacuum for us, but at the same time his contribution to the region would keep inspiring us for times to come.
