The All Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) has launched a fiery protest in Guwahati, accusing the BJP-led Central government of “betraying Assam” by extending the stay of non-Muslim foreigners till December 31, 2024.
According to AJYCP, this move tramples upon the Assam Accord and loads Assam with a 53-year burden of illegal migrants. Leaders warned that the Centre is turning the state into a “dumping ground” for Bangladeshis and destroying Assamese identity.
“This government has insulted the memory of five martyrs of the anti-CAA movement. Instead of respecting Assam’s sacrifice, they have added ten more years to the foreigners’ burden,” thundered AJYCP president Chittaranjan Basumatary at the protest site in Zoo Road, where activists waved black flags and shouted, “No CAA, BJP Go Back!”
The fresh notification, issued under the Foreigners Exemption Order, 2025, allows Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, Sikhs, Parsis, and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, and Bhutan to stay without documents till 2024.
Political parties and civil society groups—including AASU, AJP, and Congress—have condemned the move as a dangerous conspiracy against Assam’s future. Rajya Sabha MP Ajit Kumar Bhuyan called it “an insult to Assam and its martyrs,” accusing Delhi of using the state as a testing ground for communal politics.
“Earlier the BJP saddled us with 43 years of foreigners, now it’s 53 years. This government is anti-Assamese, anti-indigenous. We will fight this law with blood if needed,” AJYCP leaders declared.
With anger rising across the state, Assam looks set for another stormy battle over identity, land, and survival.
