A fierce political confrontation unfolded at Rajiv Bhawan, the Congress headquarters in Guwahati, as a large group of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders, workers, and supporters staged a provocative protest, allegedly targeting Congress leaders and their banners with violence. The incident marks a significant escalation in political tensions between Assam’s main rival parties ahead of the 2026 elections.
BJP agitators broke barricades set up by police and tore down Congress banners and posters displayed outside Rajiv Bhawan. The banners included images of key Congress figures such as state Congress president Gaurav Gogoi, opposition leader Debabrata Saikia, and Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress chief Meera Barthakur. In front of media cameras, BJP members were seen attempting to forcibly enter the Congress office, leading to clashes with security personnel.
The protest was sparked by BJP’s outrage over alleged derogatory remarks made by Congress representatives against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his late mother during the ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’ in Bihar. BJP leaders, including state spokesperson Kishore Upadhyay, condemned the Congress for disrespecting PM Modi’s family and demanded an unconditional apology from Congress leaders like Rahul Gandhi.
The BJP workers marched from Bhangagarh to Rajiv Bhawan under heavy police guard. Despite police efforts to maintain order and control the situation, the protest turned heated with slogans shouted by BJP supporters such as "Jai Shri Ram" and anti-Congress slogans like "Rahul Gandhi Go Back." Police used force to prevent BJP agitators from breaching security barriers, but the situation remained volatile.
Congress leaders and workers inside Rajiv Bhawan condemned the violence and described the BJP’s actions as a planned attack to disrupt their political activities. Congress spokesperson Rupa Kalita criticized the BJP for attempting to intimidate opposition voices and accused them of trying to stifle democracy in Assam. She also alleged that BJP fears the upcoming Congress rally in Dibrugarh led by Gaurav Gogoi, which motivated the violent protest.
The police presence was substantial, and although the BJP protesters managed to tear some banners and create a ruckus outside, no serious injuries have been reported so far. The Assam BJP has vowed to continue its protest campaign across districts, demanding a public apology from Congress.
This incident highlights the intense and polarized political climate in Assam, with both parties gearing up for the state elections next year. The BJP has accused Congress of being mentally and politically unbalanced after years out of power, while Congress blames the BJP for divisive and aggressive tactics in the state’s political arena.
