Citizens carry out protest rally against killing in Chirang

Villagers from greater Bengtal area of Chirang district joined hands in a protest rally carried out on Thursday against killing of Ratna Narzary (42), an innocent villager of Kumguri village of Chirang district at Laopani area of Kokrajhar district early morning of Wednesday by security forces.

Security forces belonging to 7 Sikh LI (Army) and Kokrajhar police claimed that Ratna Narzary was cadre of NDFB-S, who was killed at Laopani (Ashrabari) area under Bishmuri police outpost in Kokrajhar district. However, the family member and villagers said he is a simple village person and not involved with any rebel group.

Over thousand villagers from greater Bengtal area joined with banner, placards along with death body Ratna Narzary in the protest rally, which was started from Kumguri village to Bengtal police outpost crossed two-kilometres and demanded stern justification over killing of Rata Narzary, an innocent villager and farmer of Kumguri village. Ratna,father of two daughter and a son was killed by security forces in fake encounter at Laopani area of Kokrajhar yesterday morning.

Protestors shouted slogans against security forces in protest against killing and gheraoed the Bengtal police outpost, later lifted the gheraoed after Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal assures for proper inquiry into incident through Lower Assam Commissioner. Chirang district and police administration officials rushed the Bengtal police outpost and requested the general public to cooperate with the district administration in maintaining peace and harmony in the area.

The victim's elder brother Anil Narzary said his brother was taken from Bengtal area when he was returning home from market on Tuesday evening around 4.30 pm.

"My brother had ventured out to bring some items from Bengtal market and was returning home when he was taken away and later killed by security forces, he said.

Claiming his brother to be innocent, Anil said “He is a simple public and not involved with any militants. He is a farmer and got three young children.

Questioning the action of security forces, he said, ‘If he is at all involved with any illegal activities or groups bring him before law. Why was he killed in such a cold blooded manner’, he said and demanded justice. The family members are contemplating of seeking justice and approaching the court.

Echoing the family, the village headman Tiken Borgoyary too claims that the slain person is a simple village farmer and not involved with rebels group.

‘I have been the village headman for the last 20 years and have not seen him involved in any illegal activities or involved with any militants group. He is an innocent family person and does farming to run the family. He was killed without any reason, he added

‘It has been informed that the Chief Minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal is personally monitoring the situation arises out of alleged killing of Ratna Narzary yesterday who was hailing from village Kumguri of Bengtal by the armed forces at Bengtal area’. In this regard, the CM has ordered to inquire into the matter by the Lower Assam Commissioner MU Ahmed today, said a senior government official.

Deputy Commissioner, Chirang Binod Kumar Deka and SP Shankar Brata Raimedhi have also been constantly monitoring the situation of Bengtal with placing sufficient number of security personnel. The DC has informed that as of now the situation of Bengtal is under control.

Apurna Narzary, an international women's football player, has been nominated for the Emerging Player award for 2022-23 by the Sports & Youth Welfare department of the government of Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR). Narzary has represented India in several international events and is the daughter of Biswajit Narzary of Khagrabari village in Kokrajhar district.
