Sir,

As citizens of this country we register our deep anxiety and distress at the proposed amendment of the Citizenship Act under consideration of the Joint Select Committee of Parliament. Whatever humanitarian consideration prompted the proposed amendment granting citizenship to persons belonging to minority communities namely Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh, it is going to be highly inimical to the indigenous people of Assam and to the federal structure of the state.

At the moment, based on Assam Accord, at the intervention of the Supreme Court of India and on the instruction of the Central government, the Government of Assam is engaged in intensive updating of the National Register for Citizens (NRC) to include people permanently residing in the state till 24th March 1971 and to treat them alone as genuine citizens of the country.

The present attempt of the Central Government to extend citizenship beyond the cutoff date of 24th March, 1971 is not acceptable to the people of Assam. The state of Assam is already overburdened with high influx of foreign nationals from Bangladesh, causing serious economic and social distress and identity crisis for the indigenous communities of Assam. Under these circumstances, the proposed amendment poses an existential threat to the existing indigenous communities. 

In view of the above, we request you to withdraw the proposed amendment, or at the very least to exempt the state of Assam from the purview of the proposed amendment to the Citizenship Act.

Further, we request you to permit the people of Assam to submit their views in their own mother language in view of the fact that neither English nor Hindi is widely known among the indigenous communities of Assam.

HS results on Monday

The Assam Higher Secondary Education Council is all set to announce the HS results in all streams on Monday. The results would be available for all at 10 in the morning. Students can view the results through online websites on the mentioned date, for the Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA) which conducted the examination in the month of March 2013. Candidates can view their results by entering their roll code and roll number in http://resultsassam.nic.in/. Properties worth twenty lakhs were reduced to ashes when a devastating fire broke out at a car workshop in Dibrugarh district on Sunday.The fire took place at Laipuli early in the morning due to electric short circuit which later engulfed the entire workshop. Police took several hours to bring the situation under control. The real extent of damage is yet to be ascertained.

AIUDF names Aminul for RS poll

The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has announced that party General Secretary Aminul Islam would be its candidate for the second seat in the forthcoming Rajya Sabha polls in Assam. Elections will be held to fill up the vacancies which have arisen due to the expiry of the term of office of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who is a Rajya Sabha member from Assam, and AGP MP Kumar Deepak Das on June 14 next.

Gogoi completes 12 years as CM

The Tarun Gogoi government completes two years in office. The Chief Minister claimed to have improved in the law and order situation in the state over the past 12 years.He added that the government has been able to bring almost all insurgent outfits to the negotiating table.

Climbers bring more pride

Assam has reasons to smile. Two youths bring pride for the state after they scaled the Mount Everest on Saturday.The first North East Indian Mount Everest expedition has scaled the final summit for Mt. Everest from the Everest Base camp. The team comprising 22 members from the region ensured the landmark victory at 5-30 in morning.The North Eastern Council and the Manipur Government sponsored the team consisting entirely of climbers from the region have Tarun Saikia and Manish Kumar Deka from Assam. The team reached Camp-III on May 15 which is located 24,000 feet above the sea level. Another Maoist held in Guwahati

Guwahati police have arrested a Maoist activist in the city on Saturday. Known as Prasanna Rabha, the youth was picked up from Udalbarka during a combing operation in the area four days after his sister was arrested. Police claimed him to be close associate of central committee member Aklanta Rabha who was arrested last month.

Ijaz tops HSLC exam as SEBA announces results

The Board of Secondary Education announced the results of the High School Leaving Certificate and the Assam High Madrassa Examinations on Friday. Altogether 2,59,149 candidates emerged successful out of 3,66,476. Cyclone alert across Assam

Its high alert across the state as cyclone Mahasen is likely to hit the north-eastern states during the next 12 hours. Areas near the Brahmaputra are on high alert and have been closed for the next 2 days and fishermen have been restricted in these areas. Control rooms have been set up in several district headquarters to help the victims if required. The storm surfaced over the Andaman and Nicobar islands on May 10 and was moving in north-west direction but on May 14.
