Appeal to withdraw the proposed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

Sir,

As citizens of this country we register our deep anxiety and distress at the proposed amendment of the Citizenship Act under consideration of the Joint Select Committee of Parliament. Whatever humanitarian consideration prompted the proposed amendment granting citizenship to persons belonging to minority communities namely Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh, it is going to be highly inimical to the indigenous people of Assam and to the federal structure of the state.

At the moment, based on Assam Accord, at the intervention of the Supreme Court of India and on the instruction of the Central government, the Government of Assam is engaged in intensive updating of the National Register for Citizens (NRC) to include people permanently residing in the state till 24th March 1971 and to treat them alone as genuine citizens of the country.

The present attempt of the Central Government to extend citizenship beyond the cutoff date of 24th March, 1971 is not acceptable to the people of Assam. The state of Assam is already overburdened with high influx of foreign nationals from Bangladesh, causing serious economic and social distress and identity crisis for the indigenous communities of Assam. Under these circumstances, the proposed amendment poses an existential threat to the existing indigenous communities. 

In view of the above, we request you to withdraw the proposed amendment, or at the very least to exempt the state of Assam from the purview of the proposed amendment to the Citizenship Act.

Further, we request you to permit the people of Assam to submit their views in their own mother language in view of the fact that neither English nor Hindi is widely known among the indigenous communities of Assam.

Yoga in Tinsukia jail

The Indian Yoga Culture and Yoga Therapy Centre, Guwahati with support from government authorities and home departments is on a mission to promote yoga culture in all Jails of Assam. Yoga in Dibrugarh Jail

Jails in Assam will soon take the yoga route to reform prisoners. Kurmi writes to Gogoi on assault

Mariani MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi writes to Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and Assembly Speaker Pranab Gogoi demanding a high-level inquiry into the incident where he was assaulted by CRPF jawans on Friday.Senior police and civil officials are camping at the spot, but the situation was said to be tense though under control. Jorhat Superintendent of Police Sanjukta Parashar rushed to the spot and assured the MLA of action against the policemen in question.

MLA faces CRPF assault

CRPF jawans physically assaulted Congress MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi on Friday when he went to inquire about two tea planters who were kidnapped from Mariani. The inciden took place after Nagaland police handed over the duo to Assam counterpart.Two tea garden labourers, Atul Kurmi and Ranjit Nayak, of Naginijan tea estate were kidnapped by miscreants from Nagaland on Thursday. Kurmi along with his supporters went on a rampage, damaging several vehicles and gheraoing the police station. But CRPF jawans beat up him along with his supporters.

NO BJP vote in RS poll

Assam BJP legislators will abstain from voting in the Rajya Sabha polls on May 30.Party president Sarbananda Sonowal said that the MLAs would not vote as the party did not support any of the contestants - Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Santius Kujur of the Congress and AIUDF's Aminul Islam. The BJP has five members in the 126-member House.

Another rhino poaching in Kaziranga

Rhino poaching seems to have recurred in Kaziranga. A female rhinoceros was found dead with gunshot wounds and its horn removed in the Kaziranga National Park on Friday.The horn is off from the carcass near Dhanbari camp under Agratoli range by forest guards, taking the total number of the pachyderms killed this year to 25. Three bullet injuries were spotted on the carcass and three used cartridges of an AK-47 rifle were found from the spot.

Book release: Oronyot Boroxun

A book based on a screenplay of an unfinished cinema by late Mrinalkanti Das titled Oronyot Boroxun (Rain in the Forest) released at a function at Guwahati Press Club on the Friday. Noted writer Apurba Sarma formally relased the book.Long back in 2004, cinematographer-director Mrinalkanti Das planned to make a feature film. But he met with an accident while going for location hunt. He expired in that accident and his dream debut film as director remained unfinished.
