Guwahati opens new office for Anglo Indians

A new branch of the All-India Anglo-Indian Association, representing the States of the North-East with its headquarters at Guwahati, was inaugurated by Barry O’Brien, Anglo-Indian MLA, West Bengal and regional representative of the governing body of the All-India Anglo-Indian Association, New Delhi.

According to information, at a well organised meeting held in Guwahati on July 13, a new ad hoc executive committee was constituted by him with Milton Queah as president, Donald Jobe, Michael Brooks and Winston Gomez as vice-presidents and Valentine Brooks and Jennifer Brooks as secretary and treasurer respectively.The other committee members are Louis Pereira, Phillip Thipthrope, Dennis Pereira, Geraldine Smith and Linette Pereira. Later on two more members, viz William Stokman and Lawrence Anthony, were co-opted in the committee.

Gogoi claims all round development

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said Assam has developed on all fronts. In his address at the anniversary function at Sarusajai function on Saturday, Gogoi said that the state now ranks in third position in the human resources development index. ULFA bandh cripples normal life

The ULFA sponsored statewide shutdown call ended peacefully on Saturday. ULFA’s the anti- talk faction led by Paresh Baruah to gave the call to oppose Sonia Gandhi’s visit to participate in the first anniversary function of the Gogoi Government. The group also triggered a bomb blast in Tinsukia district Friday night killing one person. Amid tight security arrangements, Gandhi, as scheduled, addressed a huge gathering at Sarusojai stadium. The stadium was the venue for the celebrations of the Congress government's first anniversary of its third consecutive term in the state.

Assam Governor Janaki Ballav Patnaik conferred the Anairam Nunisa Award to the well known Journalist Kanak Sen Deka at a function in Guwahati on Saturday. Bandh paralyses normal life in Goalpara

Normal life has been paralysed in Goalpara district following a 24-hour Assam *bandh* called today by the All Assam Tribal Sangha to protest against the large-scale deprivation of the SC and ST candidates by the State Governmentin the appointment of school teachers in the name of TET qualification. Change of ownership of Hautoly TE creates tension

Tension is about to brew in Hautoly Tea Estate in Golaghat district on account of transfer of ownership. As per the information the Tea Estate is presently being managed by Moradhar Tea Co. Youth Shot Dead at Dhupdhara

A 27 years old youth was found dead at Landakhunda village, bordering Assam-Meghalaya, under Dhupdhara police station in Goalpara district early in the morning today. The youth was shot dead by unidentified gunmen as two marks of bullet holes on his chest. The body was found lying on a village road with both of his hands were tightened with his own shirt. Top Maoist leader in NIA remand

National Investigation Agency got remand of Maoist leader Indranil Chandra, alias Ajay Das for seven days after he was produced before a special court in Guwahati on Wednesday. Chandra, who heads Maoist offensive in Assam, was brought to Guwahati from Kolkata where he was recently arrested. He was produced in a NIA designated court in Guwahati and remanded to seven days of NIA custody. Chandra, hailing from Burdwan district of West Bengal, had visited the state several times to coordinate with the local Maoist cadres.
