Mahanta demands probe into Raha firing

Amid an uneasy situation AGP leader and former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta demanded an impartial probe into Friday’s police firing where a protester was killed and several others sustained injury.

Talking to Assam Times immediately after landing in Raha Chariali on Saturday, Mahanta called it an unfortunate incident adding that the government should respect the sentiment of Raha and its people. He was of the opinion that the country’s premier hospital (AIIMS) should be set up in the area. Later, Mahanta visited the family members of Mintu Deori who was killed in the incident as he along with thousands of people enforced a total bandh on the National Highway No 37 demanding AIIMS in Raha.

Local residents in large number thronged the vital road forcing police and para military forces to sprang upon them in the morning. A section of agitated people on Saturday tried to attack the convoy of MLA Piyush Hazarika on his way to the house of Mintu Deori, who was killed in Friday’s police firing. Earlier, the local residents grilled a group of ministers who visited the bereaved family members of the deceased protester.
