Bhadreswar Dihingia, A farmer collects "Bhut Jolokia" or "Naga Chili" peppers in his field at Bakata in Sivasagar district of Assam on 17-07-2008. Bhut jolokia, a thumb-sized chili pepper with frightening potency, rated the hottest chili in the world by Guinness World Records. It is widely eaten as a spice, a cure for stomach troubles and, seemingly paradoxically, a way to fight the crippling summer heat too.

I purchased naga chilli form my local Turkish veg store and dried one out. Seeds germinated and grew fine I now have 8 little seedlings :)

Patnaik lauds peace process with insurgent groups

Assam governor JB Patnaik said that the state has made notable progress in the restoration of peace in the state. Opening the budget session of the Assam Assembly on Thursday morning Patnaik said that peace talks are in progress between ULFA and government. he said that more and more insurgent groups were coming forward to join the national main stream. APA cadre arrested in Tamulpur

Security forces averted a major disaster in Nalbari district on Thursday when a hardcore Adivasi Peoples’ Army cadre was arrested. Identified as Suleman Khan, he was apprehended during a combing operation by police and army in Kumarikata area in Tamulpur on Thursday morning. Crucial budget session begins

Assam governor Janki Ballav Patnaik has opened the one month long budget session on Thursday. The session will have 15 working days. During the session, the budget is scheduled to be passed on March 28. The crucial Bills would be introduced in between March 1 and 16. Altogether 12 notices have been placed for introduction of bills. These include The Assam Kaziranga University Bill, 2012 and The Assam Venture Sanskrit and Pali Educational Institutions (Provincialisation of Services) Bill. SC to decide on fate of Mahendra Das

The Supreme Court is expected to decide on the fate of death convict Mahendra Das on Thursday. The country’s apex court is set to deliver the crucial judgment on the Special Leave Petition filed by Mahendra Nath Das where he has pleaded that his death sentence should be commuted to lifer. His mercy petition was rejected by the President after an inordinate delay of 12 years and plea for commutation to life imprisonment on this ground was dismissed by the Gauhati High Court.

Assam Assembly begins budget session

Amid tight security, the Assam Assembly begins its budget session from Thursday. The month-long session opens with Governor JB Patnaik’s speech. A set of crucial bills are expected to be passed in this session. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is scheduled to table the state budget for 2012-13 financial year on March 12.

Daimary agrees to talk to Centre

The Centre is soon set to strike a peace accord with Ranjan Daimary faction of the NDFB. According to a highly placed sources, Daimary who has been in talks with peace interlocutor PC Haldar from inside the Guwahati Central Jail has finally urged the Centre to proceed. 4 ULFA men arrested in Sivasagar

Sivasagar police have arrested 3 pro talk ULFA cadres on extortion charges in the hear of the town. Identified as Ashim Bora alias Pankaj Gogoi, Mukul Saikia and Jiten Gohain, they were arrested when they were on the way to extort money from a businessman at the Rong ghar Chariali. They allegedly served a notice to a businessman demanding Rs 20,0000 in cash in the name of Jiban Moran.

Grenade explosion in Guwahati

At least five people sustained injury when suspected ULFA exploded a powerful grenade in Guwahati on Tuesday. The incident took place in front of the Assam state BJP office in the busy Zoo Road at around 6-10 in the evening. According to eyewitness, the grenade was hurled from inside a Tata Sawari leaving at least two persons injured who were rushed to the GMCH. The injured people include a auto driver and a taxi driver. Top ranked police and civil officials have arrived in the spot and apprehended it an ULFA handi work.

All Women Health Check-up Camp at Press Club

The city based NEMCARE Hospital in association with Guwahati Press Club has organized an all women health check-up camp on March 4 next. The health camp will start at 10 am and continue till 2 pm. Organized on the eve of International Women's Day (March 8), the camp will be conducted by a group of lady doctors of the hospital. The basic objective behind the camp is to bring all women journalists and wives of working journalists for an exclusive health check up for gynecological and other related problems of women. The lady journalists and spouses of working journalists are requested to participate in the camp.
