The World Environment Day was observed centrally by the Pollution Control Board & the forest department in collaboration with Green Guard Nature Organization at the Kamala Devi Todi Smriti Bhawan, Nagaon. Green Guard Nature Organization Secretary General Rituraj Phukan was the main Resource Person and delivered the keynote address with an audio-visual presentation on the WED 2016 Theme 'Go Wild For Life - Fight against the Illegal Trade in Wildlife'.
Chief Guest & Nagaon MLA Mr. Rupak Sarmah, Nagaon MLA Mr. Rupak Sarmah spoke at length on the importance of environmental protection and the commitment of the new Assam government towards a pollution free environment. Nagaon Deputy Commissioner Mr. Adil Khan, IAS spoke about the importance of inculcating environment awareness in young minds.
DFO Social Forestry Mr. Rajib Gogoi and Nagaon College Principal Dr. Sarat Borkotoki, who presided over the meeting, and Green Guard Organizing Secretary Hemanta Sharma were among the distinguished speakers. A photography exhibition showcasing the wildlife conservation initiatives of Green Guard Nature Organization was also organized.
The Forest Department also conducted a free sapling distribution programme on the sidelines. Copies of Sanctuary Asia and several leaflets published by the Pollution Control Board, Assam were distributed to the gathering which comprised of students & teachers of Loyola School Nagaon, officers & staff of the Forest Deparment, Pollution Control Board, other departments, civil Society and general public.
Other activities included sapling plantation by the Chief Guest, ceremonial lighting of lamp, and distribution of prizes for the art competition organized at various schools on 3rd June to commemorate the World Environment Day. Mr. Pankaj Kumar Dutta, Executive Engineer, Pollution Control Board Nagaon, was the convenor of the event and coordinated the proceedings.
