Gorkhas of Assam extends support to Gorkhaland demand

Chief spokesperson of Gorkha Autonomous Council Demand Committee (GACDC) the political wing of All Assam Gorkha Students' Union (AAGSU) in Assam Mr. Purna Chetri speaking as a Special Guest of Honour at the 194th Bhanu Jayanti and 1st Bi-nennial Conference of Bokajan Regional Committee of AAGSU at Talbalijan Birsa Munda Mini Stadium, Sariahajan (Bokajan) in Karbianglong extended full co-operation to the Gorkhaland statehood demand in West Bengal. He added that the culture, tradition and language of Gorkhas no where resemble the counterpart Bengalis so there is no means of staying within the same geographical entity. For the larger interest of Gorkhas the Govt. of West Bengal and Govt. of India should create Gorkhaland within the territory of West Bengal at the earliest possible without further involving in blood shedding politics. He informed the media and the general people that AAGSU and GACDC two apex bodies of Gorkhas of Assam in a resolution have supported the statehood demand of Gorkhaland. He even called upon the state government to fulfill its promise of providing Gorkha Development Council for the all-round development of Gorkhas of Assam. It needs to mention here that over the past few years after the silver jubilee of 1976 born All Assam Gorkha Students' Union (AAGSU), the student body has been demanding Gorkha Autonomous Council (GAC) within the territory of Assam on satellite basis meanwhile the Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi declared January 21st in the open session of Assam Gorkha Sammelan at Digboi to provide Gorkha Development Council along with six other agitating communities.

Addressing as Chief Guest Dil Bahadur Limboo, President All Assam Gorkha Students' Union (AAGSU) recalled the contributions of veteran Freedom fighter Babu Chabilal Upadhyay whose contribution went unrecorded in the History of Assam. He said that it was Chabilal Upadhyay under whose presidentship the then Assam Association was converted into now Assam Pradesh Congress Committee(APCC) whose product is our CM Tarun Gogoi. But then the ruling Congress has forgotten the contribution of this particular person who is equivalent to Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi. He lamented that the Govt. of Assam refused to even stand a bronze statue of the veteran leader at his birth place in Tezpur meanwhile airport, roads and several statues of his colleague Gopinath Bordoloi has been raised. It is a conspiracy hatched to uproot the identity of Gorkhas in Assam he added

He even reiterated that the Gorkhas of Assam have always been very loyal to their motherland so they even called Assamese as their mother tongue at the call Ambikagiri Rai Choudhury as there was threat from Bengali language to the existence of Assamese as official language. Socially, economically, politically, culturally and even historically the Gorkhas have contributed for the cause of Assam and at large India. On the august occasion of birth anniversary of a great poet he paid his heartfelt homage and called up[on youth to follow good ideologies of great personalities.

Earlier delivering his keynote address Harkha Bahadur Chetri, President, Gorkha Autonomous Council Demand Committee (GACDC) said that demand of Gorkha Autnomous Council is result of Government failure of resolving our other small demands to identify Gorkhas as 1st class citizen in Assam. He called upon the youth to prepare for democratic protest to achieve their identity of being the 1st class historically contributing Gorkha community in Assam. He said that Gorkhas of Assam are the siblings of those who became a part of sovereign India after the historic 1816 Sagooly treaty between East India Company and Nepal monarch where in a large part of then Nepal upto Goalpara of now Assam was inducted into India for administrative reforms. Technically to divide and rule and always question the citizenship the Gorkhas the Indo Nepal friendship Treaty was signed in 1950 by Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru the 1st prime minister of independent India with then Nepal monarch. AAGSU had earlier demanded withdrawal of clauses vi and vii of Indo Nepal Friendship Treaty (1950) and issue passport visa system for reciprocal visit by the citizen of either countries so that genuine Indian Gorkhas citizenship is not questioned and smelt over frequent visit by the foreigners from the neighborhood. GACDC is commited to create Gorkha Autnomous Council to solve all problems and issues, he added. 28 members organization of Peoples Committee for Peace Initiative in Assam(PCPIA) have extrended moral and a few have given written assurance in support of Gorkha Autonomous Council.

The open session thronged by more than 5500 people was attended by Biren Singh Engti the only MP from the Autonous Hills District K/A and NC Hills, Mangal Singh Engti Chief Executive Member (CEM) Karbianglong Autonomous Council(KAAC) who answered the queries of student leaders , Pitambar Gurung President, Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangha, Assam State Committee and several other dignitaries including representatives of students' union of all communities of Assam. All the leaders echoed in same voice and extended full support to creation of Gorkha Autonomous council in Assam.

Interesting comments going on, and I am wondering about the comments of persons who always think positive about the Gorkhalis, whether it be Assam Manipur, Meghalaya or Arunachal Pradesh - Nepali speaking people are always get some bitter from all the other ingenious brothers, even if they know what type of people the Gorkhas are, they just want to put a label "people from Nepal" and they don't want to understand the history, or the contribution these people have done for the state in particular and nation as a whole, I would like to point out one thing, the first to be hanged to death in Manipur by the British was Subedar Niranjan Singh Chettri, but the Manipuri brothers would mention Niranjan Singh only, but there was a newspaper who got the details and printed out in the daily. rather than blaming the particular community which always mingle with every community of north east in the whole nation, Gorkhali had lived with every community with peace. any way waiting for more comments, and let the Indian Gorkhas get their own state that is Darjeeling, and Gorkha (Nepali speaking community of India) live with every other community as it did. And lets make north east the best place on earth with mutual understanding with sense of brotherhood peace and prosperity.

What the heck are you demanding for?? It seems to me as if after 20 years Bangladeshis are going to demand for their own land in Assam. If Bangladeshis are foreigners so Nepalis. It does not matter when did you come here.
krishna kr.pradhan's picture

Please do not compare Bangladeshi with Nepali. We are demanding G.L.not at Assam but in West Bengal (original land of Nepali/Gorkha). But be sure that very soon Assam will turn into Bangladesh.
milk talukdar's picture

No matter where you from, Bangladesh, Bihar, Nepal, Bhutan. you are not Assamese as long as you don't think to be an Assamese. Gorkhaland in Assam or West Bengal is just a dream, like LTTE's Tamil Ellam in srilanka. If you Nepaliese want to stay in Assam, try to be an Assamese keeping your own cultural heritage.
Dahi Tamra's picture

Dear Milk Talukdar, Interesting name you have, my name is Dahi (curd) your name is Milk (doodh). Jokes apart, who are you to decide Gorkhaland will not be formed in India? You must have seen that the Gorkhas are the only community which has integrated into the Assamese community unlike others. You must appreciate that instead of just writing without thinking.
Dahi Tamra's picture

Doodh dangoriya, You may prefer nepali instead of gorkha but we prefer to call ourselves gorkha to distinguish ourselves from Nepal's nepalese. As for debating gorkhaland in Assam, what is wrong with that? Doesn't asomiya brethren rejoice when some asomiya in far off does well? Didn't asom rejoice when Dr. Deka became the dean of AIIMS? Gorkhaland gives us an identity. When some non-asomiya asks me where I'm from, I tell them I'm from Asom. But, when an asomiya asks me and I answer I'm from Asom, next question is asomiya nei? When I say nepali/gorkha, then that warmth is gone. Since you said Gorkhaland in India is not possible, you ought to answer me and not Subhash Ghising. Bujhi palenei?
milk talukdar's picture

Sorry what does duodh mean? it is not asomiya word. asomiya word is dugdha, or gakhir. u r advocating as good asomiya but using nepali or Hindi word. i am not bound to answer why gorkhaland is not possible in india, since ghising is there. ask why he compromised with indian government just for autonomy. try to be asomiya first not by words by action like using proper asomiya word my dear. i know one bengali song sung by famous band in Kolkata (chandra-bindu) doodh na khale hobi ne bhalo sele. so its not asomiya word, chect it out Mr. Limbu

Gakhir bhaiti, I could not make head or tail of what you have written. Which class are you studying in? Go and first learn to write properly and argue with me. FYI, I didn't ask you to learn Nepal's history as I'm myself not interested in that. My point is "when my surname is Tamra" , why did you have to drag Limbu here? Besi kau-kau korile ki labh??
milk talukdar's picture

dear so called brother, dahi what does mean? its not an asomiya word either. curd, we call doi. there are lot of bihu song regarding doi in asmoiya culture. first learn asomiya then introduce urself as asomiya. if ur not understanding english why u eager to debate with me. u r welcome by any ways.u started it, i just said my opinion here. it does not matter how efficient m i? matter is point to point. yes i am trying to learn english, but asomiya is the main for me. i am not like you to advertise myself. why r u fabricating urself as good asomiya since u don't know asimiya well. first learn asomiya and then go debate in english.

Mr. Milk If you think one has to prove as a true assamese only on the basis of language then i think you yourself have an english name "MILK". World is changing and lets not be too conservative . I dont want to demean you but just want to clear you on the basis of constructive critisiscm.
milk talukdar's picture

Mr. dipak, i would like to make it clear that i never told that language is the basis of an asomiya. my meaning is MILK and CURD has been wrongly tralslated to asomiya language. non-conservative does not mean that we have to use wrong words or give up our own beautiful words. for ur concern MILK is the combination of the first 4 latters of my name. got it? read the records, i just made one constructive opinion and then one guy stated this debate. he questioned my nationality! so. world is changing but we can't afford lose our language. its final and we all should concern about this.

Searching for my high school frens i got into this disscussion. There were very good opinions in the beginning but now the for some time people are puting their perspective on personal matters. well lets go for common cause the benefit of Assam and the north east as a whole. My early life spent in Dimapur has a very wonderfull image of the life there in north east. Assam the land of bounty It boasts of all the resorces available in the country. the people are hard working nature has been generous to it. But look there are problems every where bodos are fighting, karbis are too, and now the Gorkhas or lets say The ethnic Nepalis are raising their voices. its good approaches of social trans formation. People from every ethnicity should have their voices Heard. I cite here the last stannza of austialian anthem For those who've come across the seas We've boundless plains to share, With courage let us all combine To advance Australia fair. In joyful strains then let us sing, Advance Australia fair. Look at the country they have advanced. migration is the process of humanity people migrate from one place to another since times immemorial. America has a black prez> look nepal has a Madhesi {Ethnic Bihari} prez. searching for roots of anyone will not solve the problem We should not think of tribe wars in this age we have to include all caste tribes in the social political and intellectual mainstream. It is very wrong thinking of ethnic cleansing, one comment finds parralelism in LTTE and gorkhas. We have to remem ber that its our diversity that makes us assam, or broadly speaking India,. WEll lease comment i hope for your critical thinking and comment on my post I will be visitng to read some wonderful comments.
