Noted writer and poet Tafajjul Ali is no more to seek the fragrance of Bokul ful and thereby to command appreciation from all section of the people. He breathed his last on Saturday at his beloved Bakultol in Bakultol in Guwahati.
The multi-faceted personality was born in 15th October 1929 in a tea garden in Darrang district. After completing his schooling from Tongla and Mangaldoi, Ali graduated with Assamese Honours from Cotton College and attained his post graduate degree from Gauhati University. Although his father was a physician, Ali had been exposed to a musical environment at home since his childhood days. He composed his first song at the tender age of eight.
He has given music to and even sung for a host of Assamese films and some of these have been all-time hits. Noted among his films are Putola Ghar, Aai Mur Jonome Jonome, Hunor Horin etc. Tafajjul Ali had also written several renowned dramas like Napati kenekoi thaku, Bakhantir Biya and Sobir Manuh. He was also the founding secretary of Asom Natya Sanmilan. Ali had also become actively involved with the mobile theatres of Assam. In recognition of his contribution to literature and culture, the Assam government had crowned him with the Bishnu Rabha Award in 1995. Ali was a member of the governing body of Srimanta Sankardev Kalashetra and a lifetime member of Jyoti Chitraban Films Society. Last year in the month of September, a compilation of Tafajjul Ali’s songs was published. The book was aptly named Bakulor Gundh. Tafajjul Ali had a fetish for the flower called Bakul. So great was his fascination for this flower that he had named his residence Bakultol, which means Underneath the Bakul.

Supreme Court on Wednesday talked of two options before the government to end the decade old Assam-Nagaland border row.
