Guwahati, growing by leaps and bounds in every sphere is home to a number of acclaimed writers. In fact some of the finest and decorated writers India can boast of are from the North East leaving no exception to the state of Assam. Writing in English from the region is well accepted by the prevailing current of thought. It stands tall for its richness and is identifiable as literature from the frontier region of India across genres.
Set up in 2005 city based publishing house WordSmith Publishers Sunday launched Anthology of Young Authors, by-far the first English compendium of short fiction produced by young writers of the city schools in Guwahati at the NEDFi House Auditorium, Dispur. The anthology is a result of a series of workshops in Creative Writing in English conducted by WordSmith Publishers with prospective schools in a bid to sharpen, hone and recognize the writing faculties of young minds.
Literary meets conducted in the city from time to time, reserve no room for children and children's writing. Organized conditioning of young children towards creative writing go amiss. Best said the young and the amateur never receive the expected attention and grooming to venture out of the box and better their writing. WordSmith Publishers help school students shed their writing inhibitions and rid their mental blocks. The house efforts to enhance creative writing among children and trigger their imagination and intellectual curiosity at an impressionable age, an age when they begin to emulate and absorb things said Rupanjali Baruah, Publisher, WordSmith Publishers while talking on children's writing.
In what can be termed as an absolute first time, children writers were invited on-stage to release copies of the anthology breaking the stereotypical fashion of roping in celebrity figures to do the onus.
Speaking during the launch event Suresh Chandra Das, Dean, University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya said that students opportune to be themselves and open up and refine their writing rigors more during workshops mainly due to the method inculcated to relax and wake up their minds.
Lauding the efforts put into the workshops, prolific writer and Assistant Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Dr. Abhijit Rabha said that the journey WordSmith Publishers embarked upon has succeeded in the discovery of commendable inward talents and expressions in the students and hence the compilation.
Present during the launch among others were Sattyakee D'com Bhuyan, Debananda Ulup, Munin Bhattachayra, Dilip Tamuly, Olee Bora, Ratul Baruah, Champak Borbora, Jitendra Kumar Singha and Afreed Islam to name a few.
